I've bought one or two decent Swiss watches over the years - so the idea of putting these in a safe to wear an £800 electric thing seems an anathema.

Also, I quite like having a unique and individual watch.

However.... (!)

I love gadgets and will be very tempted. biggrin

I have a pebble (kickstarter edition) somewhere.

I really don't use it. It just sits in my watch box. I like the idea of the monitoring on the Apple watch, however it is far too expensive for anything that looks good. I'd be looking at £1000, and I'd rather buy a watch that'd still be useful in a few years.

I might get a gen 2. I've skipped the first model in each series - iPod, IPhone, iMac, etc... yes a big fan of apple but find the 2nd gen is normally a better product.

So, has anyone read the reviews? I just read the one from The Verge and it seems to be exactly what I was expecting it to be. Kind of cool, but it seems even Apple isn't exactly sure what they want the Watch to do yet. Seems like it's jack of all trades and master of none at the moment.

I am very surprised to hear about it's speed, or lack thereof. I'm not sure what it's like for others but the two things that are sure to piss me off are slow devices and the internet dropping, obviously it's the former that's the concern here. What with quad core phones and laptops with SSDs I'm used to my devices being more or less instant in day to day tasks and I'm not sure I could pay a lot of money for something that isn't.

Anyone else have any further thoughts?

It seems not unlike Google Glass. Lots of ooohs and aaaahs, people saying "just think of the possibilities" and yet when it comes down to it, it isn't really that useful. To echo the above sentiments, I think we need to wait a couple of years for them to work out battery life, case design, user interface and apps.

The Apple watch sounds like a gimmicky product of limited usefulness with serious battery life issues and it will be obsolete within 12 months.

So it is certain to be a huge success, and everyone will be wearing one this time next year smile

'cept Glass was never a real "thing", google explicitly stated that it was testing the grounds with one, and if subscribed to getting one you'll be one of testers.

Imho it's nowhere near as innovative as the Glasses, from the looks of it it's barely on par with current crop of smart watches in everything but display?

I did read The Verge review and I agree that it was kind if what I thought it would be.

After a bit of consideration, the girlfriend is pre-ordering one today. She was undecided but I told her that if she disliked it then she would probably be able to sell it for near enough what she paid for it after a couple of months, as seems to be the way with Apple products. In fact people in my office have already asked to buy it if she doesn't like it!

the verge review should be taken with a pinch of salt. It reads like a sponsored Apple advert. He says it is slow and the battery life is terrible, gives it 7 out of 10 which is less than the Moto 360 an then proclaims it the best smart watch out there???? I'd wait for more unbiased reviews if you are basing a purchase on a review.

yes Verge have always been VERY Apple minded, if they give an Apple product anything lower than an 8, be careful.

So who's getting one then. They're advertising them like mad which I've not known Apple do before with a brand new product which makes me think they are worried.
Are you mental? Do you not remember the iMac adverts? The iPod adverts? The fking MACINTOSH advert in the 80s?

Wow, you're right.

I read it the other night on my phone and I thought it was a great piece of design. Apparently they didn't think anyone would open it up on a screen bigger than 6"?

It's clearly designed for visitors with a touch screen monitor and gaming graphics card
- Win 7 laptop with IE 8 - utterly broken
- Win 7 laptop with Chrome - awkward
- Win 8 with IE11, touchscreen and GTX 970 graphics card - actually rather cool
- iPad air 2 - functionally it works but not responsive

Apple taking pre-orders today: http://store.apple.com/uk/watch

Much cheaper on the US store, will probably wait until after the initial rush and walk into an Apple Store when I'm in the States

Why are those "pre-orders" and not just "orders"? Is there another step after you "pre-order" it to then "order" it? If I buy one well after the release date, am I "post-ordering" it? Silly terminology from the retail world.

Because it's cooler to say "I pre-ordered it" in the line at starbucks?
