Got to buy an Ipad in a shop tomorrow, advice appreciated.
Discussion
Hi guys
Apologies for what is probably a basic question, but I need to buy an iPad tomorrow, from a high street store. It's for a nipper to use for homework and games. I know nothing whatsoever about iPads, and am frankly disinterested. The recipient, however, is likely to be my harshest critic, so I don't want to buy the wrong thing.
I have been advised that this case: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Griffin-GB35108-Survivor-M... is the one to have, so whatever the device is needs to fit in one.
We've got John Lewis, PC World and Currys near here, if that helps.
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
John Lewis is the store to go to great customer service.
However the link is to a case that is no longer in the current lineup of iPad models. However if you go for an air then this is the same case http://www.amazon.co.uk/Griffin-Survivor-Military-...
Beware that the case is not suitable for air2.
I had a griffin survivor case on my phone and hated it. And gave it to my cousin who had broken his (builder and phone survived) however we have the same case on company iPads and they are brilliant and I regret getting a leather case for my iPad. I may actually change to it.

Great thank you, so an iPad Air is the one to buy then. However the link is to a case that is no longer in the current lineup of iPad models. However if you go for an air then this is the same case http://www.amazon.co.uk/Griffin-Survivor-Military-...

I bought an iPad Air a month ago after reading several reviews saying the Air 2 isn't much of an improvement over the Air if you are only using it for basic functions. The Air was a fair bit cheaper. I bought mine from Apple as we could get discount with them through some work scheme but it was only a couple of percent off. Failing that I would have got one from John Lewis. I bought a 32gb Air for £340 (I think from memory) the Air 2 start at round about £400.
I would get the Air 1 or 2 though, the latter has the later chip, got the air when it came out and the faster chip is a plus. How much faster and how much of a leap is the A8 over the A7?
But went for the 64gb option. Colleagues bought the 32 and found it a bit tight on memory and it was a £80 or £100 per memory step when I bought mine. Half full at the moment with some large games, 2gb or so. But if I need the space I can delete the game and re install it at a later date. Once bought it is always there (unless pulled from the app store).
Not sure what you will need to do for the account settings for purchases.

I wasn't sure what the long term benefit is, is all.
Edit. Cripes, the price just sank in!
Edit 2. Ah, put me cripes away. I paid a fair chunk for the air 64gb when it came out. Just looking at the web site. Also Air 1 only going up to 32gb?

I'd suggest going for the newer model if you can stretch to it.
What with Apple's planned obsolescence, the newer model will get you at least an extra year's worth of life before the iOS updates are no longer available for the device, possibly even two years, before the latest apps can no longer be downloaded. That and the fact that the newer model is a fair bit more responsive.
I know it's more pricey but unless you like replacing kit every other year it's worth thinking about.

On the basis that I needed to get this sorted, I have ordered one for collection from John Lewis. It's an Air 16GB and a Griffin Survivior case.
Thank you all for your advice, it was greatly appreciated.
That should be sufficient. I don't think its worth paying the extra for the Air 2.Thank you all for your advice, it was greatly appreciated.

Great to hear. That case will be bombproof aswell so keep it in it and it will have a very good resale value when the need to upgrade arrives. Thank you all for your advice, it was greatly appreciated.

They're offering three year guarantees at the moment I think? I got my Air2 from John Lewis as I wanted the included two year warranty.Thank you all for your advice, it was greatly appreciated.

If you've the money, get the iPad Air2. The newer Chip may come handy in 2 to 3 years time
