Hi all,

I've got the lg g3 and got so fed up with it being laggy I decided to root and add a custom ROM, which has worked wonders, just a heads up in case anyone else is getting fed up with how slow it runs

Regards

...and this is why I'll only by Android phones that come with stock android.

However just to clarify: you do not need to root your device in order to install a custom ROM. You just need to unlock the boot loader.

SWMBO has a G3 for a month now too, and she even complains about it being slow and laggy, after moving from a Lenovo s820 !

Samsung have filled their phones with crap software for a number of years now and I can't stand using a Samsung device because of it, but it would appear LG have now become as proficient at crippling their devices with bloatware and poorly written software.

I have pretty much settled on a sim-free G3 as my next phone (looking to buy in a few weeks). Is lag a serious enough issue to avoid?. I have been through quite a few reviews online and none of them mentioned it as an issue.

I am not completely against rooting, but would be concerned about warranty issues.

It's a good phone, on paper the specs should mean it runs smoothly, however it can lag at times, some of my friends don't notice it on theirs , but I think compared to a lot of the other phones out there it shouldn't happen, now I've rooted it I'm very happy with it as I don't want to wait 5 secs for the message app to open sometimes

Thanks for the reply. The only other phone that I want is near enough double the price so I may have to consider taking a gamble with rooting.

Is it as easy as other Android devices?. I rooted a ZTE a few years ago and that was relatively easy.

IMO the lag completely ruins the ownership experience I've had mine a few months now and aside from lag there is heat and poor battery life as well. Granted I can have a spare battery to throw in, but really shouldn't be needed. Lovely bit of hardware ruined by horrible software.

I can root the phone to sort the lag and battery life shouldn't be an issue for me, but heat issues are off putting. I will have to delve more into reviews as the ones I have seen didn't seem to pick on on that.

The only other phone that interests me is the Note 4, but those go for way more than I want to spend, so looks like I will be keeping my old phone a bit longer.

Couple of questions. What rom are you using and can you use skygo and online banking?

My g3 is great but the lollipop update has broken the Bluetooth link with the car. It won't stay connected for more than a couple of minutes before cutting out before pausing the radio whilst it connects. Worked fine with kitkat.

I rolled it back to kitkat and asked it not to update automatically but it's updated itself back to 5.01. Grrh. Bluetooth issues seem to be common in this version of android.

The heat thing is strange. It gets warm when watching video but it gets mentally hot when just in my pocket walking down the street.

Hi Im using cyanmod 12 at the moment based on lollipop 5.2 all good so far, like a new phone, also if you Google lg g3 lag issues there's a few developer setting you can change to see if it helps. My phone used to get really warm but after custom rom no longer an issue

For the less ROM savvy amongst us (OK, just me) would you mind throwing up a link or two to the ROM source and rooting method you used?. I know I can Google, but it helps to know beforehand what works and what isn't worth bothering with.

If a custom ROM cures the heat issue then the phone is very much back in the running.

Get a Oneplus One, I can't believe how good mines has turned out to be, runs Cyanogenmod out of the box, no bloat were, no lag and cheap

I was sold on a Oneplus until I found out (thanks to PH!) that it does not work on all 4G networks in the UK.

Doesn't make much real world difference and the Oneplus makes up for it in so many other ways

I'm struggling to put a custom rom on mine and I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong?

I had an OTA update to android 5.0 and wanted to one click root but from what I read this worked better with 4.XX so I looked at how to go back to stock. I got the stock from the internet and downloaded LG Flash tool. This failed at 99.9% and I had a status 2 bricked phone. According to internet comments from people with other once G3 bricked phones this happens if you don't use the original USB cable or if you use the wrong USB port on your computer (3.0 speed as opposed to 2.0).

So I changed to another USB port and it worked and I was back to 4.4.2.

I then downloaded a one click root program and that worked.

I've now got CM12 and the googleapps pack from the link provided by the OP above. If I understand correctly I need a rom manager so that when I go to recovery mode the phone will revert to this (TWRP in my case) as opposed to doing a hard reset.

If I go into recovery through the phone it doesn't detect TWRP on my phone and just hard resets.

If I go into recovery through the TWRP app it says I have a mount error on my SD card so can't find the CM12 rom.

Is there anything obvious I'm doing wrong here?

I haven't tried it yet as I have yet to buy the phone, but from the reading I have done the CM12 file has to be in the root of the SD card, not in a folder. If it already is, then I would have a look through the XDA forum link. Most of it is over my head, but you might find a post where someone has had a similar issue.

Did you get the googleapps download from the link in the ibtimes article?. I tried that but the link appears to be dead. The CM12 link just above it worked though.

I managed it in the end today - but to be honest I didn't have a clue what I was doing. There are definitely more things to consider and research than most of the 10 step guides insinuate!

The first custom recovery install stated it was a success but resulted in a bootloop (stuck at 4 circles) and then it worked on the second attempt. Did exactly the same process each time.

Ultimately it was worth it as it's much faster overall and has a longer battery life. I got the google apps from another link, can't recall the link but I found it from a google. However, I do have a problem with the play store crashing (tried clearing cache/uninstalling updates) which will need a bit of working out how to fix.

Agree with comment above that it's better to buy devices with stock android from the outset.
