Best free movie maker for Windows

I've been tasked with putting together a movie from a boys road trip, with some footage from phones and a go pro, both videos and stills.

I've got the GoPro software, which I have only used once but not that much of a fan of, and the built in movie maker on windows..

Does anyone have any recommendations for a free (or shareware) piece of software that is an improvement on the 2 mentioned bits of software. I've only got an I5 laptop so its not hugely powerful though I'm not looking at doing anything crazy special effects wise!

I use Sony Vegas - which used to be a free download for 30 days direct from Sony. (Then if you like it you can get an older version for about £15)

What exactly is it you want to do, that movie maker wont do ?

Pretty damn good, though have nothing to compare it to as haven't bothered looking for anything else
