This is what I do. A personal calendar and a shared with with my other half. Everything on the shared one gets synced automatically. Both parties can edit the entires/make entries etc.

really pleased I'd read this thread, didn't know you could share calendars with other iOS users. Be quite a nice simple solution for the family now my children are working variable shifts. As we all have our own iCloud accounts, this will be a doddle, so thanks all

Another vote for Google calendars.
We did the whole icloud thing but once someone decides not to use an iPhone, you're fked.

Yup, Google works everywhere, iCloud locks you to Apple hardware.
