My iPhone 4S has just lost the display completely.

It went suddenly.

I connected the phone to my Apple MacMini via iTunes, and the battery says 84%, so that seems OK.

( The Phone ' squeaks' on connecting to the MacMini, so I can assume that it is charging OK.)

Just no display at all !

Before I take it in to the Apple store in Gateshead, has anyone any suggestions..!!

Probably worth a punt replacing the screen? (£10 ish from the Bay). Relatively straight forward (just fiddly).

Or a repair shop only charge about £35 from memory?

Could just try holding the power and home buttons down for 5-10 seconds.
Will restart phone & maybe sort it.

This.

But failing that, it could be a ribbon cable issue.

I had the same thing happen on a brand new iPhone 6 where the screen went black but the phone was still working as it would ring etc.

Apple replaced the phone as the cable that went from screen to phone was iffy.

My wifes 4s has the same issue occasionally and the only way we can get it working again is to let the battery drain completely for a few days, then plug it into itunes.

And that is still running ios7

Thanks to all.

I shall let it discharge the battery completely and start it up again; see if that helps.

The phone is over 2 years old and was bought from a pal who had looked after it and it is in mint condition.

If the discharge above does not work, I shall take it in to a local repair shop and see what they can do. It is a pity as this is my first smart phone and I have all my CDs loaded onto it....about 100 at the last count ! So as long as it does not cost too much I shall get it sorted.

It has the very latest operating system installed very recently....hope the upgrade has not caused this issue..!

My 4S is on the latest upgrade, all okay. Back it up in iTunes, then you won't lose your music.

Thanks again. I have drained the battery overnight, then charged it up from zero: seems to be working OK now. I have backed up the phone data on iTunes so hopefully it will be fine now.... smile
