Monitor size - what's too big?

I'm looking to buy a new monitor in the next few weeks and am torn at what to buy.
Primarily it will be used for gaming, so 1ms response and 144hz are a must.
If you must have a 1ms response, then that means a TN panel and they're awful.Primarily it will be used for gaming, so 1ms response and 144hz are a must.
I bought an Asus ROG Swift as I thought I could live with a TN panel but I couldn't...the colours were terrible and even moving your head slightly off-centre, the colours would change and dim dramatically.
Thankfully, it was also faulty, so I sent it back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2ProvWa6h4
Now I'm using the Acer XB270HU, which is a 27" 2560 x 1440 144hz GSync monitor and it's an IPS panel and has a 4ms response.

It has a slower response time than a TN but that really isn't the be-all and end-all in gaming, as the superior IPS gives better and more accurate colours.

But if I play online I'll need to drop to 1280x720 to get a decent fps.
Oh this is such a first world dilemma ... but at least I don't need to worry about the size
I have a 27" 2560x1440 monitor and drop the resolution for Star Citizen to 1920x1080 (the only game I have to) and its perfectly fine. No distortion or stretching.Oh this is such a first world dilemma ... but at least I don't need to worry about the size
In actual fact when I sit at my desk I wear glasses and annoyingly they shrink the monitor by about 2" so in reality I'm looking at a 25" screen and I'm thinking "This screen doesn't look very big!".
Its a hard life!

I think I'm set on 1440p, maybe treat myself to a 980ti when they're out too.
That monitor looks nice but at nearly £800 I can't justify that I don't think!
The ROG Swift is probably the best monitor for FPS out. As above its TN though so the Acer XB270HU is definitely the overall gaming monitor to get. That monitor looks nice but at nearly £800 I can't justify that I don't think!
I've personally got am Asus PB278QR. Does fine with my standard and gaming use.

So how about this, although it's out of stock:

IPS, 144hz, 1440p, 4ms, AMD Freesync

I have a 1920x1200 desktop and that seems just about the limit of size of icons etc for a resolution.
A 4k desktop on max resolution is insane as shown below;
