There is supposedly a workaround until a software patch is released:
Go in to Settings, then the Notifications tab, Messages and then switch off the slider called "show on lock screen" and under "alert style when unlocked" choose "none."
While this will stop messages appearing on the lock screen it should, at least, stop your phone from rebooting.
Interestingly, though, I saw that fix on a couple of websites (Gizmodo, Lifehacker) but I now can't find it on their sites. It looks like they've pulled the story, so maybe the fix doesn't work. Still, there's no real harm in trying it.

That only works to stop it from crashing your phone if somebody sends it you, if it's already happened it doesn't have any affect. Go in to Settings, then the Notifications tab, Messages and then switch off the slider called "show on lock screen" and under "alert style when unlocked" choose "none."

But it is a good idea to do that now incase some idiot decides to send you the message, hopefully its fixed by tomorrow!

, one of the problems seems to be, you have to reply by using Siri (as you can't get into the message app).Is there an easy way to see who sent it?
I'm expecting people asking me to fix it today. Currently the way to avoid it apparently is to turn off notifications for messages, beforehand.
Knowing Apple, it'll probably take them a couple of weeks to fix it as well (well, first acknowledge it, then fix it) :/.
if you know who sent the message you can either reply by talking to siri, or go to 'notes' type something, then go to the box in the middle at the bottom to 'share' press message and then type in who you want the message to go to. or take a picture and then go to 'share' and follow the same procedure.
my problem was i couldnt see who sent the message in the first place! pretty crap, but nothing 10mins, reset and restore to a back up didnt fix.

The way I still looked at messages was click a photo and then click message, click to send to the person who's message stream you want to see then remove the photo and the whole message stream will show. You can just text normally there but can't delete anything.

Figured how to fix it if you got sent it, if your the person that sent it though I'm not sure if you can without deleting and restoring.
Find out who sent you it by doing what I put in the above post, then just send them any message the same way so the glitched message isn't the last thing on the message stream.
Then it will let you open your messages without crashing and quickly delete the whole message stream with the glitched message in it.

this happened to my girlfriends phone on wednesday night, none of the work arounds/ fixes worked, so wiped and restored to its last back up.
then last night the same thing happened again!! the most annoying thing is she doesnt know who is sending the message. the message app icon shows a number '1' on it, showing one unread message, but she doesnt know who sent the message. if you 'swipe down' from the top of the screen and get notifications etc... it doesnt show as anyone has sent a message. its very annoying to happen 2 nights in a row.

You have to turn on screen alert and banner notifications off, that's what makes the phone crash.then last night the same thing happened again!! the most annoying thing is she doesnt know who is sending the message. the message app icon shows a number '1' on it, showing one unread message, but she doesnt know who sent the message. if you 'swipe down' from the top of the screen and get notifications etc... it doesnt show as anyone has sent a message. its very annoying to happen 2 nights in a row.
