Serious question, why would I want to do this?

What does Windows 10 do that Windows 7 doesn't?
Supports more ram and has better disk IO so will be very useful for some.

So Windows 7 Pro = 192 GB of RAM max (currently have 8GB).

My disk IO seems pretty fast on my SSD drive.

I think I'll stick with Win7 for now.

...but thanks very much for answering.

If you game you'll want it, otherwise there are a few nice things to have like virtual desktops etc but not a great deal of "must haves"

You will have a key tied to your ID at the Windows Store. The view is that you will be able to use that key to download an ISO.

ETA: You will be able to perform a clean install.
Excellent news, thanks for that

But eventually they'll stop supporting Win7, so I'll be taking a free copy of Win10 while it's available rather than having to pay later.

OK, good point. How about this: I have Win7 installed on my main HD, I install it again on a second HD, upgrade that to Win10. So now I have one HD with Win7 and one with Win10, think that would work?

Also how long do you think Win7 will be supported? XP was supported for what, 15 years?

Not a bad idea that. Clean win7 install on separate had/partition, upgrade to win10 when it comes out, then transfer to that, move data, delete old partition.

Interesting about Windows updates being fully automatic for home users. Pro and Ent will have the option not to install but home users won't, it'll be done whether you like it or not...

I don't let my machines update automatically especially as it can often require a restart. I get the notification but normally wait to see if it breaks something for others before installing it myself.
I'm dreading this, quite frankly. We have enough trouble with automatic f**ker-uppers updates as it is.

That wont happen again. Probably the main reason MS are doing this is to get people on a newer version so they don't have to keep supporting ancient operating systems.

It's not "people" as such - it's all about large businesses. Many of them didn't want to move off XP. Indeed XP in embedded applications is being supported until 2019.

Users in big firms can't just click the icon and upgrade.

Win7 Support is currently scheduled to end in 2020.

7 wasn't broke in UI terms, 8.1 is. A very good OS spoiled by an unsuitable UI for desktops IMO...
Thanks. Will stick to 7!

Ditto. Gamma test. biggrin

Will it work on a mediocre machine or will I have to upgrade? Will it run on a machine that currently runs XP?
It is supposed to work on a phone with 512MB, so it should work on almost anything. That said, "drivers" as in "lack of" may stop play.
Thanks. I'm slightly concerned that it'll be st and I can't go back. You know the old adage, if it ain't broke...
If I do it I'll be taking a clone of the disk first so I can roll back if needs be.
Good idea.

8.1+ Classic Shell is the best of both worlds, 8.1 is very good under the bonnet, they just fked up the UI as WW says.

I've sat waiting all week....
As an afterthought, my lap top fro PC World has no "key sticker" anywhere, could this be the problem, do Windows not know I'm here

There is so much exaggeration about the 8.1 interface. It is easy to make it default to the desktop, rather than Metro and the Metro screen is just a massive start menu. I use it at home on my gaming PC and at work on a Surface 3 Pro and I'm perfectly happy with it. I do prefer Windows 10 though. I'm jut annoyed that they're killing Media Center.

I did that and it came back again, although I think I set it to notifications. Will try hiding it.

Edit: yep that doesn't work either.

According to this article, you need to Uninstall update KB3035583 to stop it bothering you again.

7 does everything I want, there are no issues and I like the layout. I'm not going to risk this.
In the same boat.
Same here.

Win7 is perfect for my usage (internet, emails etc), and I certainly don't want anything that even slightly resembles Win8.

New OS's early months have a habit of causing all sorts of compatibility issues and crap I really don't need, and in any case, by the time MS stop supporting 7, the latest OS of the day will already be out anyway - so no thanks.
