7 wasn't broke in UI terms, 8.1 is. A very good OS spoiled by an unsuitable UI for desktops IMO...
Thanks. Will stick to 7!
8.1+ Classic Shell is the best of both worlds, 8.1 is very good under the bonnet, they just fked up the UI as WW says.
There is so much exaggeration about the 8.1 interface. It is easy to make it default to the desktop, rather than Metro and the Metro screen is just a massive start menu. I use it at home on my gaming PC and at work on a Surface 3 Pro and I'm perfectly happy with it. I do prefer Windows 10 though. I'm jut annoyed that they're killing Media Center.
If it was good it would have been a success. Just because it is newer it isn't necessarily better. MS have bought out some turkeys over the years, 8.x is one of them.

I disagree. Windows 8.1 - with Metro a completely avoidable "feature" - is a nice upgrade in several areas from 7.

That said it isn't an essential upgrade by any means.

Unfortunately for MS you're in a minority. The kernel is good, very good, but the UI just doesn't work for most people. It sounds like they've learned a lot from it and 10 will be better from a desktop point of view.

My first experience of W8.1 from a desktop perspective was mixed. As long as you put a start button in there, it is like a faster version of W7. But without something like classic start, it was a bit of a downer. On the other side of that, use it in tablet mode (I have one of the cheap W8.1 tabs) and Metro does work quite well.

W10 does seem to be giving the best of both worlds, although so far I've only used it on the desktop. Not sure I want to make the leap to W10 on the tablet before seeing how well it works.

If I accept the Windows 10 Upgrade, can I put my windows 7 onto my other PC or does it become unusable? The other PC currently runs Windows XP but has been dead for a while thanks to hard drive failure.

That's a very good question, which I'd like answered too but details are still thin on the ground from Microsoft.

If Windows 10 was a paid-for upgrade, then yes, I'd agree that my Windows 7 product key would then become null and void but as Windows 10 is a free upgrade, then why should that free software nullify a paid-for piece of software.

You're getting a free upgrade to *that* licence key, not another piece of free software.

WTF? How is it unclear? Does your existing license allow you to install your existing O/S on another machine simultaneously?

Are we also unclear on the "Upgrade to Win10 and Microsoft will give you an iPad" situation? hehe

Why not transfer the licence before it updates and put a blag copy on the XP machine or indeed just a blag copy on the XP one and wait for the upgrades.

I'm a Mac user, so a but out of tune with Windows stuff, except fixing my girlfriend's PC occasionally. Her PC is running Windows 7, is this upgrade something I should be doing? Is the operating system considerably better? Is it a complete UI change?

By all means reserve it but I'd wait a few months before actually installing; they'll need a certain amount of time to fix the inevitable teething problems and bugs that accompany pretty much all new operating systems. In the meantime, you'll get to hear what the early adopters are saying as to whether it's an improvement etc. etc. smile

That's great news....

Will the iPad be an iPad 2, I so want to do side by side multitasking on a tablet. Apple are such innovators, that's such a good idea. Where do they get their inspiration?

A lot of those issues have already been found and fixed by the massive public beta programme.

Where is this upgrade notification on the bottom right everyone is talking about? I don't have it. (Windows 7).

Go and do a manual check for Windows updates, it's one of them that triggers the WX notification.
