Can't you just use the login option where you click on an image or whatever? Will that speed login up?
oooh.. need to investigate! didn't see/know that - ive only rebooted once (this morning) .. que 5 mins of a 'wtf is my password' moment! will look into that, thanks EDIT:
picture seems to be for touchscreens.. (draw a circle etc).. not sure if it'd work via mouse, didn't try as saw the option to use a PIN number instead - the mrs and I will both be able to remember that one! thanks

has anyone else spotted how ludicrously, and deliberately, difficult Edge makes things if you want to switch from stty Bing for search to Google. Microsoft do make me chuckle
I didn't find it that hard, well no harder than anything else on Edge - I really don't like things that replace words with meaningless symbols. If I were to complain about Win10 - Edge really is the worst thing about it, it's slow, it hangs and it's hard to navigate - it's form over function and it's getting on my nerves.
Win10 seemed much slower to boot than Win8.1 at first, but I think there may have been some background stuff going on as it's almost back to Win8 levels now.

Not a problem - just backup your data, do the in-situ upgrade to 10. Then extract the newly-provided Win 10 key, flatten the machine and install clean. Shouldn't take long to do, no need to wait.
Thanks, sounds like I'll have to give that a go!Any instructions on this online? How do you get by the "clean install" media for win 10?
Download the installer for 32 or 64bit. When it runs, you're given two options - upgrade or download to burn to DVD/USB key. Do the 'download as iso' option which will save a windows.iso to your machine. Burn this to DVD.
Then run the installer again but this time choose 'Upgrade this pc'. This upgrades your 7 install and turns your 7 key into a 10 key. Once you have10 running, extract the key using one of the tools mentioned on this thread. Then wipe the drive and do a clean install from the DVD you've burned.
To be honest, I did the in situ on the laptop and it's worked great - I can't be faffed reinstalling everything!
Anyone else having issues with a Broadcom NetXtreme? Drivers OK, flashing lights on the NIC, known good port on the router, known good cable. And yet it is reporting cable unplugged. Grrr.
Upgraded OK aside from that, reset (needed it anyway realistically), but this is annoying me. Suggestions before I wander off an buy a low profile ethernet card?

Perception is a funny thing - I've found Edge to be blazingly fast compared to Chrome and Firefox, for me though the absence of any kind of adblock means I won't use Edge at all.Fetchez la vache said:
I haven't got any media for my laptop - just over a year old and didn't come with any OS cd/dvd (do any these days?)
How would I go back if something borks / can I get hold of a genuine Win 8.1 disc?
Is there a recovery partition? You can create the disk using the instructions on this page: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/creat...How would I go back if something borks / can I get hold of a genuine Win 8.1 disc?
The key may well be in your bios, as it is for my Lenovo.
W10 will allow you to roll back for 30 days, too.
I've been using it since last night and I quite like it!
I've only had one problem, which was that it stuck to 1024x760 resolution, but when I updated the display adapter it went back to normal (although it still looks to me slightly weird).
Otherwise, I have no problems to report.
Free update from Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
Compaq CQ56 (4GB RAM, Intel T4500 2.3GHz)

At the minute Edge doesn't support any extensions, although in a future update it should. Suppose at the minute it is like the original Chrome, a very light wait browser. Give it 12months and it will grind to a halt with all the extra stuff that gets added.RobinBanks said:

I had a similar resolution difficulty to start with. I right clicked on the desktop, selected Display Settings | Advanced display settings and corrected the resolution from the drop-down menu.I've only had one problem, which was that it stuck to 1024x760 resolution, but when I updated the display adapter it went back to normal (although it still looks to me slightly weird).

No, it wouldn't list any higher resolution until I updated. It also wouldn't recognize my external display (it's usually plugged into that).Hope this helps.
It's just the icons on the desktop. Are they just bigger in 10?
MY only other issue is with the Start menu. How can I find the list of installed things like before?
I can never remember the exact name of some of them so I scroll down to find them, which jogs my memory. I can't do that with type to search.
Wow, the good news just keeps coming on W10.
I initially thought it had disabled/broken the scroll function on my touchpad. In fact it has enabled the 'two fingers to scroll' thing (which it never had before!)
On top of which the thing is much more responsive and just nicer to use.
Not bad for the cheapest laptop in PC World 4/5 years ago. I think it'll last me another few years.

Just having a play with Edge.
It's annoying having web pages full of adverts again. Seems fast on non advert laden pages.
I do like the reading option, great for newpapers websites, gets rid of all the other c**p when trying to read an article.
An article about Edge http://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-edge-right...

Now need to reinstall windows 7 again. Or might just buy a macbook!
Won't let me install either on my sole windows machine, which is running 7 home premium... apparently my wireless card is too slow (despite the fact i only use that computer via etherneti) and it is not NX compatible. Meh.I ditched windows laptops for macbook airs some time ago and genuinely haven't looked back or missed them at all.
This windows 10 malarky and just the sheer frustration of trying to do anything with windows has pushed me to buy a mac mini for desktop use now and ditch windows once and for all.

Word of warning to those updating from Win 7 to win 10 that have an NVIDIA graphics card. Win 10 swats NVIDIA like a bug. I am running on windows "basic" drivers as it doesn't even recognise my GPU
I have found a supposed fix but I won't know if it works until later today when I get home from work but seems its a problem with the auto updater and it downloading the windows approved NVIDIA drivers which actually aren't correct.
The crux of the fix is you have to kill all NVIDIA processes before updating the drivers as it cannot overwrite them otherwise (unlike a normal driver update where it just gets on with it and then re-boots the machine to bring the new drivers online
Works perfectly without doing anything here on Windows 10 from 7 upgrade- Nvidia GTX660. No issues whatsoever with drivers.I have found a supposed fix but I won't know if it works until later today when I get home from work but seems its a problem with the auto updater and it downloading the windows approved NVIDIA drivers which actually aren't correct.
