What I did was to upgrade W7 and check it was activated. Then use a keyfinder prog to get the W10 (upgrade) key/registration number, which as you might expect was different from the original W7 one. I used "showkey" which came from a member on the Windows10 Forum
http://www.tenforums.com/software-apps/2577-showke...
Then a clean install on a new SSD, I got exactly the same sequence, skip at first but eventually it nags for a number. Input the one from the upgrade and it's activated. There are also reports of folks just ignoring the nag screen and eventually it just activates. No idea why, but there's at least one guy who said it activated after 3 "skips". Putting in the key works right away though.
can you confirm if you used show key when you had w10 installed? Im a bit confused when i should run showkey.http://www.tenforums.com/software-apps/2577-showke...

thanks
1. Laptop running W7, select the "upgrade to W10" option from within W7. Let it run/download and upgrade the laptop. (note, it only does this if your system is fully up to date, so if you've not updated W7 or W8 for a while you should do that before attempting the W10 upgrade)
2. Upgrade finished. No numbers entered and it's running W10. Check it's activated and everything is as it should be from within your new W10 system.
3. Run Showkey, this will give you a screen with the new W10 number and on mine it also showed the previous W7 number.
4. I wrote that down, removed the HD, inserted a new SSD and did a clean install on the new drive. Skipped the first number entry but when it nagged again, I used the one I'd got from Showkey. Straight through & activated.
^^^^^^ Thanks for that.
Took the gamble and upgraded my main desktop this morning. Just over an hour and utterly painless.
This machine is now a lot snappier and far quicker to boot up.
The only issue is that I have a Sandisk USB drive that I wanted to install the W10 media on to and the MS tool doesn't recognize the disk as being a USB drive at all....

My main PC is refusing to install it. Windows 7 ultimate on a 128GB SDD. So I bought a bigger SSD this morning, cloned my 128GB SSD (because if it all went wrong I'd be stuffed). Then I tried to install on my cloned SSD and it said windows 10 could not be installed because it could not access the System Partition. I looked that up and found out that W7 has a 100MB system partition and W10 whas a 350MB one (same as W8). Then I tried repartitioning my system partition but I tried 3 different tools and all off the refused to change the system partition size. Finally, I stuck my original SSD back in and tried to repartition that and that too was having none of it.
So, my score is:
Windows 8.1 Laptop - Worked, just lost mail settings
Windows 7 Home PC - Worked, but wanted a password that I've never used. Ignore that and it carried on regardless.
Windows 7 Ultimate PC - Failed to even start since it says it can't access the system partition.

I deleted a load of registry entries and managed to lose the start menu

That helped me get it back

Probably my final observation of the day:
I've been monitoring CPU temps and how the computer feels through my palms, and it appears to be cooler than it was running on 7.
mine also runs cooler than it did on 7.. I built this new rig a couple months ago and temps are closely monitored (always worried when ive built it!!).. and its a noticeable amount cooler id say for basic usage/idle (hard to tell for certain as ambient temps play a part).I've been monitoring CPU temps and how the computer feels through my palms, and it appears to be cooler than it was running on 7.
however, ive been running the thing flat out for last 6 hrs (98-100%usage on all cores) and its core temp is sitting at 42degrees (+/- 1 spikes), where it's tended to be around 50 degrees when all cores are full bore..(plus i need to clean my dust filters I noticed earlier!).. though I can tell without looking that its running cooler as it doesn't sound like a tornado is in the case as the fans haven't fully kicked in! .. well chuffed

Installed it on my Venue Pro 8. Holy st there are some dumb fking ideas here. Tablet mode feels complicated and MS seem to have gone too far back into making it feel like being on a desktop. It's awkward.
Do you have any more thoughts on that? I have a Venue 8 Pro but I haven't upgraded that yet so any thoughts would be welcome StormLoaded said:

Mine is just an old, cheap Compaq laptop but it seems to hover around 48 degrees CPU core temp now rather than 57-59. There's a lot less heat noticeable through the keyboard.however, ive been running the thing flat out for last 6 hrs (98-100%usage on all cores) and its core temp is sitting at 42degrees (+/- 1 spikes), where it's tended to be around 50 degrees when all cores are full bore..(plus i need to clean my dust filters I noticed earlier!).. though I can tell without looking that its running cooler as it doesn't sound like a tornado is in the case as the fans haven't fully kicked in! .. well chuffed
The fan is also on less. All this should be good for battery life!
Talking of which, I like how it gives a "time left to charge" indicator

No touch gestures for a start, ie, no flicking left or right to go forward and back in your browser.taskbar permanently along the bottom a la Android
A lot of apps are simply maximised desktop windows. Ie, no fullscreen browser like you had with IE11. The intuitive Metro interface is gone. With Edge for example, you have the url bar at the top, forward and backward buttons, your tabs are along the top, favourites are just a list. None of that touching the bottom of the screen to bring up your url bar, then little icons for favourites or to switch to another tab. It uses up valuable real estate.
Skype doesn't seem to want to close once I've opened it, I ended up having to kill the process.
The onscreen keyboard sometimes takes forever to pop up, or even doesn't appear at all. Trying to reply on PH can take a few attempts.
The 'metro' type screen is now vertically scrolling instead of horizontal. The icons are far smaller, more cluttered and more difficult to read.
A lot of the time you feel like you're dealing with a desktop shoehorned into your tablet which would be ironic seeing as the complaints about 8 were it was too tablet like on desktops!

I might not bother updating it then, at least for now.
I've just messed around with it in tablet mode on my laptop, and I see what you mean. It seems pretty rubbish - just like a simplified version of desktop.

Try using a Puppy Linux boot cd. Puppy runs entirely in your RAM so you can use the on board software to change your hard drive partitions. Never failed me.So, my score is:

I still haven't got my download.
You can force it.http://pocketnow.com/2015/07/29/force-windows-10-u...
Just click on the ISO
Also I just installed Win 10 on a Lenovo Flex 2 with NVIDIA GT840M graphics and it works perfectly.
Only complaint so far is that there is no ad blocker for edge so I'm back to using Chrome.

I knew they would do that.Win8 was great on tablets and phones, but a step too far for desktop. So it was bye, bye Sinofski.
Now Win10 is great for desktop users, but wrong for tablet. D'Oh.
