Reading all this - my main use for my HP, PC World special, PC is internet use and email.

If Edge isn't that good and has no ad-blocker I think I'll stick with 7 (which I love) for 6 months until things improve a bit.

GGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Bloody Microsoft. On my 5th attempt now. Why can MS never just release something that will simply upgrade without frigging about with registries and corrupted files. If I didn't play PC games I'd have gone Mac years ago.

You do know that there are other browsers?

Thanks very much, that sorted it out.

It did stop again with an error and said it was booting to SAFE_OS. I googled the error and found the suggestion of disabling your anti-virus. I did that, and downloaded the media installer again (in case it has been upgraded) and it worked without ant further problems.

Try using a Puppy Linux boot cd. Puppy runs entirely in your RAM so you can use the on board software to change your hard drive partitions. Never failed me.
Oddly, all the programs I tried would let me change all my other partitions (so I created some unallocated space from my C: drive) but it would not allow any changes to the system partition.

Now it's installed, one change is that the task bar is shown on all 3 of my monitors. The one I've set as my main desktop shows the start button, new search thing, all the quick launch icons and the status area (time and date, notifications etc) but now on the other two monitors, it shows the start button and quick launch icons only (my desktop is extended, not cloned).

Is this normal ? If it is it's a good idea.

Probably my final observation of the day:

I've been monitoring CPU temps and how the computer feels through my palms, and it appears to be cooler than it was running on 7.
My laptop feels cooler on my lap, but I may be imagining that.

To answer my own question : It's an option in Task Bar and Start Menu Properties.

Some more observations;

That seamless OneDrive integration in Win8? The ability to see all the files that are on your OneDrive, even if you weren't online? Gone! Now you have to pick what folders you want to appear in file explorer and actually sync them. So whereas previously you may have a folder full of photos that you could see in your OneDrive but not have to store locally, you now have to keep them on your device if you want access to them.

Skype? Well the Metro app has long gone, it's Skype for desktop now. In tablet mode, when you select the text box, the keyboard pops over it so you can't see what you're typing. Also, cannot kill Skype despite my earlier post; once opened it stays running, refuses to close and if I kill the task it just returns again.

The 'People' tile on the start screen? No longer shows any information, no photos, only seems to pull contacts from Outlook or other email accounts, cannot add Facebook contacts like before.

Edge? Want to organise your favourites you imported in IE? Have fun hunting down the Edge favourites folder!

You can force it.

Just click on the ISO

Also I just installed Win 10 on a Lenovo Flex 2 with NVIDIA GT840M graphics and it works perfectly.

Only complaint so far is that there is no ad blocker for edge so I'm back to using Chrome.
Cheers, that worked. It's downloading now. thumbup

Can someone please help me before I throw my PC out of the window.

I have two graphics cards in my machine. One a GTX 970 the other a GTX 580. The 970 does gfx duties and the 580 I use for phys-x. One card used to drive one screen, the other, my second screen and this all worked fine under W7.

W10 is now giving me a code 43 error (stopped device because it reported problems) on the 580. I've manually updated drivers to no effect. If I disconnect the 970 then the 580 works fine and drives the second screen no problems. When I pop the 970 back in it returns the code 43 error on the 580 card.

Any suggestions please as it's driving me mad?

My CPU cores are circa 9-10 degrees C lower than on 7 without a doubt.

Also winding it up with about 20 open internet tabs, an HD video and a Word document used to make it stutter. As an experiment I've done all that and then tried GTA San Andreas (yeah, it's old but whatever) and after ten minutes it just had the fans gently running and no stutter.

I was always an early adopter of new tech, now I let you daft buggers sort it out then install it when it works hehe

When's SP1 out...

I've been early with Vista, 8 and 10.

Vista was crap (but so was the hardware I was using to run it), 8 was great and so far 10 is good apart from me messing around with the registry (trying to be cleverer than I am).

So I can't really blame 10 or Microsoft for that.

My desktop is showing around 47 degrees (just with a couple of browsers open etc). I'm fairly sure it used to show about mid to late 50s before so you may well be correct.

Here's another one I've just found and fixed (by searching):

Outlook 2103 will not send email, but windows mail will. If you get this, you need to open a cmd prompt as admin and type sfc /scannow and wait a few minutes. When it's finished it will report a couple of files has been fixed. Then restart Outlook and it works.

Word of warning to those updating from Win 7 to win 10 that have an NVIDIA graphics card. Win 10 swats NVIDIA like a bug. I am running on windows "basic" drivers as it doesn't even recognise my GPU frown

I have found a supposed fix but I won't know if it works until later today when I get home from work but seems its a problem with the auto updater and it downloading the windows approved NVIDIA drivers which actually aren't correct.

The crux of the fix is you have to kill all NVIDIA processes before updating the drivers as it cannot overwrite them otherwise (unlike a normal driver update where it just gets on with it and then re-boots the machine to bring the new drivers online irked
Works perfectly without doing anything here on Windows 10 from 7 upgrade- Nvidia GTX660. No issues whatsoever with drivers.
I had with my NVIDIA card. They had released an update last week. It tried to update and failed. Rebooted a couple of times and now it works...

Followed that exactly and it did nothing frown

Any other ideas?

Added: Unless you mean install the ISO? I suppose that means I will need my CD key? I have installed "magic jellybean finder" hopefully that is the correct number?

Hope it does not all go tits up!!

Added: bounce It now seems to be doing something. Glory awaits or the end of ever getting back online.

You need to do an 'upgrade this pc' first to change your key to a 10 one before clean installing the ISO.

Sorry, could you explain??? At the moment there is a dialog box with "Downloading Windows 10, Feel free to keep using your PC" <prev> <next> grayed out the moment as it is still downloading.
