Windows 10 upgrade notification

Interesting about Windows updates being fully automatic for home users. Pro and Ent will have the option not to install but home users won't, it'll be done whether you like it or not...
I don't let my machines update automatically especially as it can often require a restart. I get the notification but normally wait to see if it breaks something for others before installing it myself.
I may just stick with 7 and 8.1 unless there's something compelling to make the upgrade worthwhile.
Hopefully the new UI for the desktop will be the main driver.I don't let my machines update automatically especially as it can often require a restart. I get the notification but normally wait to see if it breaks something for others before installing it myself.

More annoyingly, perhaps, Microsoft has also changed how updates will work with Windows 10. Although the Pro and Enterprise editions will both be able to defer updates, Windows 10 Home users will not have the option. Updates will instead be downloaded and installed automatically as soon as they're available.
http://www.theverge.com/2015/6/1/8696949/windows-10-feature-lossI'm very happy with W7 and also W8.1 once I got Classic Shell on it.

but i'm confused . . . . where's Windows 9 ??
Apparently, too many programmers wrote code line "If version like '9*' then..." to identify Win95/98. Not sure how true that is...After all, you're talking about the company which went from the XBox 360 to the XBox One...

So will it only upgrade-in-place or will there be a way to do a clean install if we wish?Edited by Funk on Tuesday 2nd June 13:13

Hmm RE: windows key.
I've just had the icon pop up on my home PC and whilst the install of win7 is genuine. I don't have the product key.
Am I likely to come into issues when installing windows 10 when it asks for the win7 key? Will it ask for a key?
I'm wondering this too. I got the icon last night (currently running 8.1) - it's a genuine copy but I've 'misplaced' the key.I've just had the icon pop up on my home PC and whilst the install of win7 is genuine. I don't have the product key.

I've reserved the upgrade. Currently have W7 but using some legacy software from XP, including Photoshop 6 & Dreamweaver CS4.
Will this update leave these programmes installed and does anyone know whether they will work in W10?
Suggest you use the same as Funk earlier:Will this update leave these programmes installed and does anyone know whether they will work in W10?

I may be useless, but I can't locate the App that Funk used, only the one fo v8.1 which indicates that all would be well, so I shouldn't anticipate problems with 10. Fingers crossed.

I think Funk just clicked on the Windows 10 icon, then the 'hamburger menu' (three lines at top left), then clicked on "Your PC is ready". At least, that gives me that screen, though in my case warning about losing Windows Media Center.ETA- Belarc Advisor works well for product keys. Free for home use.
