Trying not to single anyone out, but could people mention what they are comparing it with, please?

'cos I'm on 8.1, see, and I like it. And it already does boot in sub 8 seconds, etc.

I have come from 8.1 on a Lenovo Yoga laptop. It boots quicker, the fan doesn't run as much and battery saving mode gives me a reported extra couple of hours so, all in all, I am happy with the upgrade.

Updated my little HP Stream 7 from 8.1 today.

Painless install.

Liked 8.1, 10, at first glance, is an improvement. Like the tablet mode toggle, desktop access and proper Start menu. Usable battery indicator at last!

Runs surprisingly well on this little 1 gig tab as well.

This may be simple (hopefully), but does anyone have any idea why I can't make my laptop sleep?

When I click the sleep button the screen goes dark but it continues to run completely normally apart from that. Compaq Presario CQ56

ETA: I've found it goes to sleep completely normally when running on battery, but on charge the screen just goes black. Maybe it's deliberate and somewhere in the settings?

Try searching for Power Options or look in the control panel, it'll be in there somewhere.

AIUI RT will get an update in September with some of the Gucci elements of Win10, like Cortana and Edge.

Why not just use something different to play music? You're the second person I've seen talking about junking the entire OS because of a trivial application. Utterly absurd; just use something else for audio...
Calm down hehe

I should have explained in more detail. I wasn't thinking about reverting because of groovy music, that was just a minor annoyance & my biggest problem was/is resolution & screen displays. For some reason 10 couldn't recognise my 22 inch screen so would load on the tv through an HDMI lead so I would have to go into that to select different settings to get my usual screen to turn on.

To cut a long story short I have overcome that problem although my resolution is not as small as I would like or small as it was with 7 & no matter what I try I can not get it how I want it, 10 just doesn't seem to be as fine tunerable as 7 was.

Overall I like 10 but I still have a few niggling little problems with it which I will try & overcome.

Goldfish, sounds like a video card driver, have you checked there's maybe a new one that is Win 10 compatible for your card?

Here's another one I've just found and fixed (by searching):

Outlook 2103 will not send email, but windows mail will. If you get this, you need to open a cmd prompt as admin and type sfc /scannow and wait a few minutes. When it's finished it will report a couple of files has been fixed. Then restart Outlook and it works.
Thank you, virtual beer for you.

I upgraded my work machine on Friday and couldn't for the life of me work out why Outlook stopped sending mail, even with some googling. Fortunately checked this thread before trying to sort it this morning and voila!

FWIW my upgrade went smoothly and the only thing which didn't work was some driver for my motherboard which doesn't appear to be that vital because everything else works hehe

Wow its slow.

Took a full 5 minutes after clicking on the start menu for it to open.
Lots of apps take ages to open as well now.

What's Cortana? I can't see it anywhere.

The install also removed Skype which is a bd as its blocked out here so have to d/l it via VPN (which it also kindly removed during the upgrade).

And what's with the US spelling..? - changed all the language settings to UK English but still the stty American spellings in the menu.

Will give it a week and if I am still having issues, will roll it back to 8.1

Cortana is MS's go at Siri.

Small circular icon on the toolbar, should be in the tiles as well. Can be voice activated too.

Nicest thing about it so far I've found is you can highlight text in the browser and click on 'Ask Cortana' and it brings up a wiki type pane of info. Saves googling stuff in a new window. Even less excuse for PHers to claim they've never heard of soaps or footballers...smile

I had no issues with any apps, but I think it reinstalled a number of mine from the web after the upgrade and configured to my settings, so if Skype is blocked it may not have been able to refresh.

I'm finding it way, way, quicker than 8.1.

There are a lot of sites reporting how W10 'spies' on the users, there's a lot to disable if you don't want it to do that.

I'd like to know how much MS will be charging for this upgrade at years end - I expect at least £100 as of 28th July 2016?

At least we will have to the end of the 30 days to role-back if in doubt.

Easy fix.

Right click anywhere on any empty part of the taskbar.

Select properties.

Untick [ ] - use small taskbar buttons

Click OK.
