Windows 10 upgrade notification
Discussion
I caved and upgraded the PC as well last night having picked up a 500Gb HDD to clone to first in case it went a bit wonky.
All went smoothly (a couple of reboots needed to sort graphics drivers etc) and Avira got nuked again (as it did on the laptop). Reinstalled that along with JRiver (which complained that it was now on a different OS - again no, different to the laptop) but here's where it got a little weirder. Win+X functions stopped working. No amount of clicking would make the items (Control Panel, File Explorer etc) launch.
After much head-scratching and a remote session with one of Microsoft's support team I worked out it was a rogue context menu handler - turned out to be JRiver (quelle surprise!). Disabling the shell extension solved the issue but I'm going to try an uninstall/reinstall tonight on it. I can live without the option in the right-click menu to be honest.
Other than that, the machine's running really quickly - no complaints from me on that front!

Download the installer for 32 or 64bit. When it runs, you're given two options - upgrade or download to burn to DVD/USB key. Do the 'download as iso' option which will save a windows.iso to your machine. Burn this to DVD.
Then run the installer again but this time choose 'Upgrade this pc'. This upgrades your 7 install and turns your 7 key into a 10 key. Once you have10 running, extract the key using one of the tools mentioned on this thread. Then wipe the drive and do a clean install from the DVD you've burned.
To be honest, I did the in situ on the laptop and it's worked great - I can't be faffed reinstalling everything!

Yeah, I agree, but I'm swapping out my 120GB SSD with a shiny new 250GB SSD, so it's the right time.

Lots here I wasn't aware of, hope it's useful.
Monday last week:
When trying to upgrade 8.1 on my 18-mnth old i5 Acer laptop from the website I ran into all sorts of problems, including a hang three times when nearly 80% through.
I downloaded it onto an external drive, then ran it and I kept being told that it needed to check if I had any updates outstanding. This would hang.
Wednesday:
After checking with winupdate, which confirmed I was all up to date, I tried again and this time ignored the check.
It still hung, but later on.
Then 8.1 ran very lumpily. The touchpad failed - that was fun. The internet ran very slowly. System restore improved it but, even after checking for all updates, and installing them, the hang happened again.
Friday:
So I did a clean install of 8, so that was the best part of the day gone with all the updates, including to 8.1. I then tried 10. I anticipated a rapid update, but it took nearly four hours.
Saturday:
All up and running. I spent a few hours with it and I have to say it is an improvement and I'm glad I did. Shame I won't get that week of my life back.
However, my desktop runs 7 and I'm happy with it. I use it for writing, websites, and video editing. I'm not inclined to rush to update that. It has nVid1a graphics and I'm told these can be a problem, so I'll wait for updates to the drivers.
Thanks for everyone's posts that helped with my upgrade.

There are a lot of sites reporting how W10 'spies' on the users, there's a lot to disable if you don't want it to do that.
Good walk through on how to do that here: https://fix10.isleaked.com/GlenMH said:

We have. It wasn't in some of the UK beta versions, but is in the production build.
This made me laugh:

Apparently the "My Pic" folder automatically feeds into the screensaver slideshow function of Win 10. Guy (stupidly) has stashed all of his pron and wifey saw it

And now, if you excuse me, I need to nip out for a bit, I think I left the gas on...

Mine's not working either
One issue to be aware of if using the upgrade option is that if you have a VPN client installed such as Cisco Any-connect, it can cause all network connectivity to be unusable (even though it appears as working in device manager).
just need to rollback and remove it and then rerun teh upgrade.
