Only taken 2 days to get the laptop working again.
none of the Microsoft files helped with back up, restore or roll back, or win 8 pro cd.
In the end I had to use the recovery partition that was still on the drive from new.
reinstall that (vista) then use the win 8 cd, then start again with the win 10 upgrade.
I think the problem was caused by the 10 upgrade turning of the wifi at some point in the upgrade.

It has lost every thing that was on here, photos (that are backed up elsewhere) but an old Sage program
that I would have liked to keep, Photoshop, that I've lost the disc for etc, but hey ho, I had stopped
using it as I hated win 8, lets see if 10 is any better.

Apparently the "My Pic" folder automatically feeds into the screensaver slideshow function of Win 10. Guy (stupidly) has stashed all of his pron and wifey saw it biggrin
Article says "Scroll down for video"

Not sure I should while I'm at work biggrin

Not convinced by the start menu at all! It now seems to have morphed into a hybrid thing that takes longer to find stuff unless you spend time customising it. Weird choice to leave it like this when there was such overwhelming opinion that favoured the Win 7 style.

There also still seems to be a mash-up of apps versus traditional in some areas too. Should I be using control panel or the "settings" app?

Better than win 8, but still a bit weird in places!

Well if it makes anyone feel better I rolled my mobile back from 10 beta to 8 and hey cortana is now working on there. Its great fun teaching it to work properly and on the face of it seems pretty smart.

Need to get a new ssd for my laptop before upgrading to win 10 desktop.

I have the same issue with Cortana on 1 PC - complains about not supported on language
just updated another PC this afternoon and its fine with cortana

re paying for W10 on 29/7/16 - you wont need to do that
there was a lot of confusion initially but MS clarified this a couple of weeks ago

If you do upgrade within the first year, you get Windows 10 for free, permanently. You don’t have to pay anything. Even after it’s been a year, your Windows 10 installation will continue working and receiving updates as normal. You won’t have to pay for some sort of Windows 10 subscription or fee to continue using it, and you’ll even get any new features Microsft adds.

Talking of which, has anyone tried Classic Shell on Win10 yet?

It worked and looked exactly the same as on Windows 8.1. I've uninstalled it now just to use the Win 10 start menu, but I'm considering reinstalling it. No problems with it at all.

Why can't we have Cortana in the UK?
We have.

It wasn't in some of the UK beta versions, but is in the production build.
I did the upgrade and it says not available in your region/language you have selected frown
I've looked everywhere for it but can't find it, perhaps in switching off some of the options I've hidden/deleted it.
It could well be down to W10 failing to install the English UK language pack. It did the same to me. If you manually install it - go to settings on the start menu and look in languages - it should work.
Have you got a VPN setup / does it need to detect some hardware - a mic etc.

Mine's not working either biggrin
It works without the mic - obviously you can't talk to it. TBH I've not used it though as I'm still trying to get the blinking thing to use my second GPU. Becuase it's different it keeps stopping the damn thing.

First impressions are good having gone from 7 to 10, much snappier. Boot time is far quicker too.

Just a small issue with excel whereby it wants to change all my £'s to $'s all the time when macro's are involved but no biggie.

Check your default Windows 10 region. My Excel did that, and turned all my dates American as well until I changed the region

I don't think cortana is being rolled out in the UK for a while (you can get round it by changing location to US/Keyboard US etc if you really can't wait)

so if you hide the taskbar in desktop mode it's also hidden in tablet mode. Which is good to know.

beer Thanks very much. It was set as UK, but I selected another then reselected UK & it's now working fine. Also removed the US language pack just in case.

I have Cortana working with UK language settings on both laptop and PC. It's actually not bad.

Upgraded my Windows 8.1 Pro installed on my iMac through Paralells yesterday, went smoothly.
I have Cortona no problem (UK language and keyboard) although at the moment it's just a novelty for me.
Software, some of it needs reactivating (Minitab, Desktopauthor) but the MS Office stuff was seamless.

Now my Windows 8.1 Laptop is still showing as waiting it's turn having already had an update fail involving Windows 10. Not sure what happened there at all!

So IMac and Parallels, perfect, native Windows Laptop, no joy yet!

How's the voice recognition compared to Google Now or Siri?

Same. Bit contrary though given it does say 'not available in your language/region' only for it to say English/UK is supported in the help link rolleyes

Not tried voice recognition yet but if it's anything like my old Nokia 710 it ought to be excellent, found it much better at recognising my accent than Google Now etc. laugh

Having finally managed to get Windows 10 on my PC, I have noticed that I don't have an icon for Outlook, either in the tiles or the All Apps part of the Stat menu. The only way I can start Outlook is to open File Explorer and go hunting for the Outlook.exe file. It won't let me create a tile or icon for it in the Start menu. I don't want it on my Desktop as I'm going for the minimalist look with only the Recycle Bin (the new icon for which is absolutely ghastly) on the Desktop.
