True but who's to say loads of developers (maybe even MS internal staff) haven't got routines at the start of their apps similar to:

if windows.version = "Windows 9*" then; dialog(Sorry this app doesn't work on Windows 9x) ; exit()

That would render all these apps useless on a Windows 9 machine without patching.
Sounds dubious to me.

The 'environment' version of my Windows 8.1 Pro is Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600] anyway.

read an article that states you will be allowed to activate Windows 10 with a Windows 7 key so you will be able to download the ISO and use your existing key to activate (you wouldn't be able to use it to activate Windows 7 again obviously).
How would that work? If I upgrade to 10, decide I don't like it, and rebuild my PC with my Win7 disk will MS's servers have somehow locked my product key to Win10 so can't be used to activate my Win7 install?
Get a 256 Gb SSD for about 70 quid. Install windows 10 technical preview. I doubt you will go back.

We got the notification on our PCs at work yesterday but I've looked at my W8.1 lap top tonight and cannot see anything.
Where should I be looking please?
I havent received the notification on my 8.1 Laptop either. I assume it will come through in time. Patience smile
I got an email overnight after registering a Win7 machine and it says it'll be available on 29th July - so plenty of time yet.
It'll come. Build it and it'll come smile

7 does everything I want, there are no issues and I like the layout. I'm not going to risk this.

Serious question, why would I want to do this?

What does Windows 10 do that Windows 7 doesn't?

It's 3 more.

It'll be supported longer, by all accounts runs better.

but i'm confused . . . . where's Windows 9 ??
Apparently, too many programmers wrote code line "If version like '9*' then..." to identify Win95/98. Not sure how true that is...
Utter bks. How much proprietary software from them days is still in circulation?!

We all know the real reason is because 7 8 9.

I've been testing the preview builds for months and it is very good.

My only issue is the dropping of Windows Media Center. That is a PITA. Our kitchen TV is a touchscreen Media Center PC that shows TV, DVDs, BluRays, Netflix, as well as our photos, the internet and email.

XBMC (now Kodi) is a worth looking at.

From reading a few online FAQ's it looks like it's only an upgrade, and you won't be able to get an ISO of a full install. That's a bit of pain because I tend to rebuild my PC every so often so I'd have to make sure I've saved the upgrade files somewhere, or re-download them after reinstalling Win7

You will have a key tied to your ID at the Windows Store. The view is that you will be able to use that key to download an ISO.

ETA: You will be able to perform a clean install.

Thanks for that. Reading that article, it seems now that the licence is tied to the hardware; I bought a full retail copy of Win7 so that it wasn't (like OEM versions are), specifically so I could install it on a new PC if I so chose. Now it appears that if I upgrade something significant in it Microsoft may decide that it's not really the same machine, which would have been fine with my Win7 licence but not with Win10.

This "supported lifetime of the device" business is fine for slates, laptops, phones etc. but enthusiast's PCs tend to evolve rather than simply be replaced in their entirety.

Several times in the past I've done hardware upgrades with Retail that failed automatic online activation, but a call to the 0800 activation centre always sorted it. I hope it will be the same with Win10.

I've been getting it on my W8.1 tablet for a little while now. I've been running W10 on my home laptop for a few months, and the current build seems fairly stable (apart from WiFi sometimes refusing to work at startup, it needs to be rebooted).

Unsure how the tablet will be upgraded - its only got 32gig internal, with 5-6 gig free. Not sure thats sufficient for an install of W10. And I'm not sure how well 10 works in tablet mode.

Sorry, I missed this before. As far as I'm aware there is no method to roll back once you have taken the upgrade. You could try the insider preview of Windows 10, as it is rapidly approaching release it is pretty representative I would imagine, you can roll back from that if you wish.
