Well I found one problem...
Poking around in Settings last night, I went to Advanced, and found an option that essentially allows other computers on the internet to download Windows updates from your computer. In essence it turns your computer into a BitTorrent-type client! This would explain why Windows Update was consuming so much resource even when no updates were being downloaded. It's because it was serving them to other computers on the internet.
I didn't believe this at first, but some research confirmed it. Win10 uses your computer as a server to distribute updates to others, and the behaviour is on by default. Over a home network I could understand it, but over the internet...it strikes me as an extremely bad idea.
I turned it off and things are a bit better now.

Spotted something last night. You can configure the lock screen to show info from certain installed apps, so I set the main one to be weather, then configured the weather app so it has my correct location etc. It still doesn't appear on the lock screen though. Am I missing something?
Works for me... I don't think I've done anything unusual...

I upgraded a couple of weeks ago and I'm struggling to find a single thing that 10 does better than 7. I'll keep it because I want to be on the latest version of DirectX for gaming but otherwise it's extremely mediocre IMO and I don't appreciate having to disable a ton of what is basically spyware either.
There's a lot of stuff that it reports back to microsoft, potentially including things like your contacts. You can turn it all off in the menus though.

Ah. I've been seeing those reports for a while, hardly spyware in my book though - certainly no worse than google's or amazon's default settings anyway.
If we want the functionality 'they' need to know this stuff.
Skynet lives.
Well my Linux box seems to work ok without contacting Redmond every time I move the mouse ..If we want the functionality 'they' need to know this stuff.

130R - "What has Windows 10 done for us - Nothing"."What about DirectX12, significantly speeds up graphics performance."
130R - "Well apart from that, What has Windows 10 done for us - Nothing".
"Well, it boots up and closes down quicker than windows 7"
130R - "Well, yes...."
"Oh and it generally feels much snappier and slicker than windows 7"
130R - "Yes, Ok, but apart from the graphics improvement, faster boot times and faster operation, what has Windows 10 done for us?"
All - "Nothing!!"
Lone voice - "Oh and it doesn't slow down after you've installed loads of programs."
All - "Oh yes, that's true."

130R - "Fine, Fine, but apart from the graphics improvement, faster boot times and faster operation and the fact it doesn't get slower over time and it's more secure, and Cortana, and consistent (but adaptive) UI across all Microsoft devices, and multiple desktops, and notification centre, and better snapping of applications, and a new faster (though admittedly not finished) browser, and continuum, and windows Hello....."
"what has Windows 10 done for us?"
