Anyone else say good morning to Alexa? Todays response was:

Good morning! On this day in 1775, after the locals threw English tea into the sea in what we now call the Boston Tea Party, the British Parliament declared the colonial province of Massachusetts to be in rebellion. To which Massachusetts replied, "well, dur!"

Been tinkering...

  • Now have basic Sonos control via Yonomi (On / Off / play favourite) which will do until proper integration appears
  • Purchased a Broadlink RM Pro, and with an old Android tablet I can now re-purpose old RF controlled plugs (ByeBye Standby) for On / Off
  • Broadlink also controls IR devices... so can either setup TV stuff or the Dyson fan...
  • Also renamed individual table lights as "lamps" (e.g. Lounge Lamp 1) as when controlling a group it helps avoid confusion. So, individuals are "lamps" whereas the group is "lights"
Haven't found any wall light switches yet that will work... they all seem to having dimming control, and we have lots of non-dimmable bulbs irked

You can make them work by using relays - what controllers do you have already?

Mine is a little aggressive so I think she has a shaved head. Maybe a beard too.

Might be possible some relays are 17mm deep

My Dot is playing up.

The last couple of days it's been randomly saying 'hello' (unprompted) - and a couple of times it's been completely unresponsive.
Unplugging and plugging back in seems to sort if for a while.

Has this happened to anyone else? Dodgy power pack perhaps?

Rebooting the router worked for me.

Somewhat related, Amazon are updating the Fire Stick to feature Alexa voice control, due out in April:

I'm using mine less and less, use it mainly for radio and almost always recently it has no idea what I'm talking about, it's getting very tedious.

Have they changed anything?

Does anyone use Echo with the TP-Link Wifi plugs?

Mine have been working great until recently. Now, when I ask it to turn on my garden light, it says 'Sorry the device garden light appears to be offline, please check it's power supply and network connection'.

This is the furthest one away from my router, but TP Link's own Kasa app can control it fine, so it should be a range issue.

Resetting the plug makes it work fine for a few days, and have even tried swapping it with another plug, and that only works for a few days as well, despite being 100% available on the app.

This.

Mine has been relegated to the bedroom and is used for nothing other than playing Spotify on a Saturday morning.

Asking it to do anything else became annoying and can be achieved more quickly by using my phone.

Mine has always lived in the bedroom, serves as a voice remote for hue as I walk down the stairs and amusement for the kids when the ask "what does the fox say" for the 50th time that day...

Mine is purely voice control for Harmony and Hue, and it works pretty much flawlessly.

timely find of this thread for me - was looking into using the dot as a 'hands free' solution to control the sonos in the bathroom when the missus is having a soak rather than my original plan of having a cheap tablet in a waterproof case on suction pads on the tiles laugh

seen a few vids on youtube of this working, "hey alexia, tell sonos to play 90s greatest hits in the bathroom" etc but reading posts about it not understanding what you're saying now concerns me - the voice system in the S3 was perfect for the first few months and now literally everything i say it doesn't have a clue (most of the time with comical results, unless i need something quick in which case i wanna bash fk out of it!)
