Interesting, thanks.

So could I put a relay between the switch and the light to allow it to be automated or switched?
You could, yes. Once any LightwaveRF item is paired with the hub even if you switch it off using the switch, it'll retain it's "pairing" when you switch it back on again. Obviously to get the benefit out of it, you'd want to leave the switch on all the time. Or bypass it altogether. Get a deeper wallbox to put one of the relays into and a blank fascia panel.

You should be able to see the lights I have connected with the relay on the garage wall and the other side of my car. The light switches in the hall are for hall, porch and landing. To run a cable back to that switch panel would require cabling through a room which is between my hall and the garage, which would be messy.

To ease switching, I've put an NFC tag next to the switch panel. It's a temp solution - I'll try to make it neater in the future but this is just a test/trial to see if I can get it working (not yet).

The technology is the same I believe, just depends if you need the speaker or not. I've got a decent hifi already so just plug the dot into it, if you need something to play music etc. buy the echo.

Just bought a couple of dots to stream music through my main stereo and Bose mini link.

So much less of a faff than streaming from my phone, so well worth the £40 they are currently.

In fact I am very impressed with the ease of set up and how straightforward it is to use. It seems very smart and makes Siri seem as dumb as a bag of bricks.

At the age of 49 I am finding things that were the stuff of science fiction in my youth are now becoming everyday. Quite an odd feeling...

Yep Star Trek stuff like mobile phones, computers, voice control etc. Still working on transporters though.

Just bought a Dot for £40 in the Prime sale.

Got to be worth that to have a play with and see what it can do.

I'm hoping it might be useful for my ageing mother too. (Dunno if you can move them between houses.)

You could, but I'm not sure if you can associate them with more than 1 wifi network like with most mobile devices

Yes exactly.

On the basis of a morning messing around with mine, I would highly recommend it. Especially when linked with a premium Spotify account.

The dot's in built speaker isn't great though. If you aren't going to hook it up to a speaker I'd go for the Echo.

I am very impressed though. I I will mainly use this for radio and Spotify and For that it is perfect. Far far better than fiddling with my phone and streaming.

Yes I would put the dot's speaker at about the quality level of a normal clock radio, so if you're happy with that your plan looks good.

Can the Echo play content from the BBC radio iPlayer?

So what connector will I need to link my incoming Dot to my main speakers in the lounge then?

I currently have everything set up via an ageing Arcam AVR350 with a million slots, many already filled.

Any clues?
