Got my Dot working in the car this evening.
Connected to my phones hotspot for the internet.
Powered by the USB cable from the car stereo. Audio worked both via the 3.5 audio lead and bluetooth. If I put one in the car permanently I'll probably use bluetooth.
2 problems. I seemed to have to shout quiet loud to get it to respond and its to big to fit in the drink holder.
Car is a 2010 Mondeo with an after market Pioneer 3600DAB stereo.
I'll also have to look at changing my sim contract as it only allows me 4gb of tethering data per month.

Was looking at bluetooth speakers for the Dot but then remembered I had an old rarely used (but expensive!) B&W Zeppelin hanging around (normally uses ipod/iphone as a source).
One 3.5 to 3.5 Aux cable later I now have the Dot banging out its sounds through a proper speaker...and very good it sounds too when set to 11! Very happy.

We have asked for the Dot due to me wanting a bigger speaker then the full Echo comes with.
How does the 'voice' work - does it automatically come out of whatever speaker is linked to the echo?
How does it work with bluetooth speakers & some of them going dormant/sleep when not in use? Does the echo wake them up in time? Or does the speaker need to be on permanently, with the bluetooth connected permanently?

The Dot has a built in speaker so can actually be used independently of Blutooth speakers. You need to ask it to connect to your speaker everytime you power them up, but it only takes a few secondsHow does the 'voice' work - does it automatically come out of whatever speaker is linked to the echo?

I actually quite like this feature "Alexa connect to bluetooth" "searching.....bing" then the sound bar shows "Echo" as the source on the display. I am really impressed with mine, have two in the house and use them alot more than I thought I would. AWS Summit in London last year had some there with IoT with the IFTTT controlling robots and st was very cool.

Do you need a special sort of bluetooth speaker (problematic ones with waking due to bluetooth?), or will any plug in one 'listen' for a bluetooth connection coming in & connect automatically?

I don't have to do this with my Dot paired with a Bose mini speaker? I just turn the speaker on and the Dot automatically diverts and starts playing through it...Just discovered that my Yamaha amp doesn't have Bluetooth!. It has Airplay, Wi-Fi, Spotify, DLNA etc but not Bluetooth.
So just ordered the Yamaha Bluetooth adapter. This will mean I'll be able to move the Dot further away from my Hi-Fi gear and speakers so should be a bit better getting it to respond.

Same. Mine runs through a Bose SoundDock. 'Alexa' play kids music' for the little one never sounded better. One 3.5 to 3.5 Aux cable later I now have the Dot banging out its sounds through a proper speaker...and very good it sounds too when set to 11! Very happy.
