See post about Plex above. Depending on your NAS you may need a server running to stream from.

"Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, and Tap devices can be used to communicate with Alexa, however at this time they can't be used for playback themselves. We hope this will be a reality in the near future"

That's disappointing. I have a large music library I'd like to play but not found a solution yet.
Any one managed to use Echo as a player for media that is local.

Annoyingly, you can't set a Chromecast as one of the player defaults, only Android players etc.
Disappointingly I use Plex through my Apple TV. I am guessing there will be a limitation there!

You can connect to the Echo as a bluetooth receiver as well and play from a Mac/PC/phone etc.

Yeah, I know I can do that. It does tie up my phone or other device which isn't ideal though.
A native player skill is what I'm looking for, ideally compatible with squeezebox. Plenty of control apps but no players.

Oddly this is how I use Plex. I have music streamed off a NSA using a Plex Server in an nvidia shield under the TV. This streams to whatever mobile device is nearby, linked to the Echo through bluetooth. The echo is then amp'd through the ceiling speakers in teh kitchen. Works well for that kind of application.

Thanks, that reads like it's just control though. Not actually playing via echo.

Just added "Ambient Noise: Thunderstorm Sounds" which is quite relaxing. Plays rain sound with distant thunder.

Also just discovered you can add skills by asking her without using the app. Learning all the time.

Space Station Skill works well:

With the Space Station Skill, discover the perfect moment to see it. To get started, enable the skill by saying "Alexa, enable Space Station" then, just ask:

Alexa, ask Space Station for current location.
Alexa, ask Space Station for next pass for London.

That's kinda cool, I might try that. Thanks!

If you click on the little binoculars with "watch" next to it at the top or bottom of the page it will do the same thing.

Alexa now available on Android smartphones... Well, sort of. You have to buy a Bluetooth dash mount by Logitech and install their app. The device is on offer at Currys for £30 at the moment:

Apparently the app will work with any mount and you can download it in the Play Store. Not sure what it will do better than Google Now so as much as I love my Echo, I'm not going to bother with this.

I was thinking why it needs a specialist mount to work. Might have a bash with it. Very useful for music in my case
