thought I would give it a try myself

bought a kit from ebay with the battery and necessary tools for £8.90

Followed instructions found on web

Took about 10 minutes to do

Screws involved (especially the ones holding the battery connector clip in place) are quite small...

You should of checked your phone before doing that as it may of cost you nothing.

They will refund you the cost if your phone was affected.

8 quid inc battery? Is it some knock off that's going to set alight as soon as its charged?

sadly not eligible (checked the serial number on there before deciding on the DIY option)

have no idea if the battery is genuine, but it looks the same, has the same markings and same connector and the eBay listing (261786720958) claims it is genuine (and 1,473 have been sold from the listing with pretty good feedback)

phone charged OK and has seen a full day of use today with no issues (maybe I should leave it outside wrapped in a fire blanket tonight though just in case!)

out of interest, sans Apple Tax, how much would you expect a 1440mAh 3.8v battery to cost? I reckon they are $1 - $1.20 out of the factory

It probably costs peanuts to make (third world slave labour?), but the mark ups are incredible for things like phone cases, chargers etc.

eBay is full of fakes though. Memory cards/flash drives, anyone? frown
