Hope someone can help with this.

I'm looking for a sim card for my father's phone.

He spends some time out of the UK and the phone can be off for up to 6 months.

Currently he has an Orange PAYG sim, but it seems to cost a lot for his usage, he's topping up £10 every few days (it's data that's eating it up)

I'd like to keep his UK number and port it to something which gives him some data. He's not a heavy user of calls, but does receive a lot when he is in this country.

I'm thinking about moving him to Giff Gaff, will this still work if the phone is off for 6 months, he doesn't want to lose the number.

Any other suggestions?

I think all UK networks will disconnect the number if it is inactive for 6 months.

Can someone not use it while he is away, if only to make a quick call or text just before it gets cut off

Can you clarify ...

Is it when he is out of the country that the phone is out of use for 6mths and that it is when he is in the UK that he receives a lot of calls and uses a lot of data?

Depending on what country he goes to? One of the Three roaming tariffs could be perfect for him as he could use it in the other country as well.

Who me ?

Last time I topped up my 3 PAYG, the message was top ups that never end. In other words, not time limited .

He normally goes away to other countries for long periods, so just uses local sim cards there.

Three does look an option as they seem quite cheap for PAYG. Wonder how often it needs to register on the network. I think he may have been off the Orange network for 7/8 months at one point.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I'd go for the Three PAYG 123 sim - 3p/min to call, 2p per sms and £10.24/gig data
