Reddit Drama? AMA's Victoria is sacked!
Discussion
I imagine there are a few redditors on here, and this seemed the most likely forum to catch them on!
What do you make of this recent drama, 100+ (apparently) subreddits locking the door including several of the big ones. The whole front page is full of posts lambasting Victoria being sacked, and as someone who thoroughly enjoyed the /AMAs I cant help but support them!

I kinda agree with that.
Take a look at BBC's bullst aggregator, The One Show, where every guest is releasing something next week, interspersed with mediocre consumer affairs.
It's just another advertisement vehicle.
Big places like Reddit will attract that sort of stuff though, the offers of doing it will come in from people wanting to raise their profile or sell something.
I don't think it is anything that could be avoided though, as the big names will only appear when it suits them.

Was watching this blow up yesterday, fascinating how a community of people who don't know each other can come together like this. On the flip side though it has ruined my internet browsing as I can no longer view the subreddits I liked! Quick summary for those who have no idea...
Reddit is like a big forum, with lots of different sections for different communities and people to talk about what they love. It ranges from technology to pictures of dragons fking cars - It really is very diverse. One of their popular features was the "AMA" section, or ask me anything. They had someone who works for Reddit (Victoria) to organise these with the high profile guests they had (Instead of leaving this to the volunteer moderators on that section).
Yesterday Victoria was sacked/fired, no warning or anything. This made the moderators (Volunteers) angry at Reddit admins (Work for Reddit) as there was no communication to them that this was occurring; and Victoria had or was organising several AMAs that would be happening shortly. In this anger, the Reddit moderators shut down the AMA section - Making it private. This was then followed by other sections/subreddits doing the same, many with hundreds of thousands of subscribers/readers. After all, if Reddit has no content it has no purpose.
This doesn't seem to be just about Victoria being sacked, but more against the way Reddit admins don't communicate or provide any help to Reddit moderators.

I've never read reddit - should I?
If you work in IT and want to grow your knowledge then basically yes For example your VMware question - go on Reddit and look on /r/storage, /r/vmware, or /r/sysadmin and you'll suddenly find a ton of useful info.
It can be a massive time black hole though and some of the bigger 'subs' have some constant historical and background politics/wrangling related to how they're moderated/admin'd.

Described very well. It really is very very diverse. Like Pistonheads has individual forums for each category Reddit has the subreddits which cover every topic known to man - anyone can create on then people subscribe to it, post in it, reply in it etc etc...more popular the topic the more people join. The CEO is a deeply unpopular women (Ellen Pao) who has a very suspicious past of sleeping, suing & blaming her way to the top. Pistonheads would love her. She seems to be steering the company in an unpopular direction (increased censorship/commercialization if the rumors are to be believed) so the community is pushing back.
edit: For those looking into it, filter on ''TOP'' for the last 24 hours etc, gives you a good idea of what the bests bits of the last 24 hours were.
