My Nokia Lumia 625 has started playing up,it will no longer play MP3s from my collection, wont play Youtube videos:says it cant play these types of files, and wont play any sounds,on an incoming call,or an alarm.
Any ideas what is wrong?
I haven't updated it from Windows 8.0,is this Bill Gates getting his own bacck on me for not using the latest version? Will updating help? Or will it need something more technical?

Well, back from the pub,and have updated it. I was worried it may ruin the phone even more than it is,as I'm sure I had read of that happening. In any event it seems to be OK, though my music seems altered,as does the look of PH. But so far so good, although email hasn't worked yet..just need to be patient I suppose.

Just annoys me that to do anything I HAVE to update wether I want it or not.

Utter nonsense, from the uninformed and dim-witted.

OP, did you try a soft reset? this might have cleared it and it won't erase the phone and data. I have had Windows Phones since they first shipped and think they are great.

And the updates are fine - no different experience from either Android or Apple, but Microsoft seems to get moaned at for the sheer cheek of providing updates with bug fixes as well as new features. I mean, how fking dare they do this...????????

Agreed.

I am using Windows eco system and it works brilliantly. Windows 8.1 laptop for work windows phone/phablet with a remote desktop to my office pc and microsoft band. Everything perfectly synced to each other. Email, calender, music etc just works music on my windows mobile is definitely sharper clarity than from my Iphone and so on.

If he really wants to complain he should try updating to Win Mobile 10 beta. At least my 1520 it is buggy as all hell. I going to have to revert to my 1020 so I can be fully functional again till 10 is stable.

So youtube updated their terms, older devices that weren't updated (or couldn't be updated) stopped working .... and because *you* haven't updated, its the fault of the phone?

Anyway, the various updates do much improve WP - variants of 8.1 do give subtle but worthwhile interface improvements.

Windows Phone is way slicker than Android, by a fair margin. I'll admit that I'm back on Android - my Lumia 1020 was a brilliant phone, but they had massively underspecced the hardware for the camera (ie. it was too slow). And I only found one glaring software "hole" in Windows Phone - the Facebook client was diabolical.

I've been using Android now for a few weeks, and it does feel clunky in comparison. It doesn't manage memory anything like as well, Chrome renders less consistently than IE on WP (which is weird, as on the desktop it is the other way round) and it does need a lot more CPU grunt.

I have to say that I agree with you. I picked up a Lumia 635 as a cheap phone (£50 plus £20 top up) while my Z3 is in for warranty work and I'm really enjoying it. I couldn't resist putting Windows 10 preview on it and it is great. I've heard that MS are bringing out a top end phone by the end of the year and I'm sorely tempted. It would be a great idea if they made a Pureview phone with the 42MP sensor and up to date specs. I'd be there like a shot!

I'm resigned to MS (and pretty much everyone else) not bothering much with imaging - there isn't a single phone on the market that can rival the 1020 for still imaging ability, let alone the 808.

There is no indication that MS are going to do a genuine high end camera device, and if the new Lumia Camera app on W10 is anything to go by ... then I won't bother. In fact, overall W10 seems like a step backwards from W8.1.

Its not a popular opinion, but I tend to feel that the interface on WP8.1 works exceptionally well. My W8.1 tablet works rather well too. Its just about acceptable on my sons laptop as long as you put a start button replacement on there.

But with W10, MS are trying to do this "it'll never ruddy well work" idea of one design can be readily adapted to all. Except it doesn't work. It seems fine on my laptop, but having tried it on my 1020 it is an absolute ruddy mess. The "hamburger" menu is exactly as used on iOS and Android, and as such any differentiation that MS had has effectively gone.

"Ahhh, but W10 has the universal apps", to which the response is "They're already here on W8.1".

Some good points. Universal apps are only code recompiled for different devices at the same time AFAIK. Windows 8.1 is great on a touch screen and I love the swiping in from the sides and the split screen views. On a non touch screen it isn't as good but the desktop is still there. Windows Phone 10 on a good spec device should be good with Continuum from what I've seen.

I agree completely. Coming to Win8 / 8.1 firstly on a phone, where it works brilliantly, to a tablet, where it works brilliantly, I have stuck with it on my desktop. The loss of overlapping windows is a big mistake, but I am mostly in Visual Studio anyway. I don't miss the "Tree Of Every Damned Executable on The Disk" at all - with instant search it belongs dead. The Win10 previews I installed were all worse, all the good points and all the consistency of the Win8 UI have been compromised or lost.

From what I've read it will be the 940 and 940XL, neither will have 40+ but around the 20mp mark. There seem to be rumours floating around that Microsoft are considering a replacement for the 1020 i.e 40+mp, but there are no confirmed plans for that yet.

My friend who works for O2 had a meeting with MS and he was told that the new phone would remove the need for a computer, you just plug it into a dock and Continuum does the rest. Sounds great if you don't game on your computer.
