I downloaded the windows 10 preview and hated it and went back to 7 Pro. Anybody plan to upgrade to 10 at the end of July for the proper version? I think I'm too familiar with 7 and anything else doesnt feel right.

Think I will be. I have Windows 8.1 on both of my computers, and Windows 10 isn't that much different to me. Each to their own really

Yep - got an issue with windows update on SWMBO's laptop (win 7) so rather than flatten to vanilla 7 and go through the tedious updates I may as well update to 10.

I've got the option to but I think I'll wait out til August'ish to see if there's any devastation. I use Windows on an old desktop and it's mainly because I need to run one type of application so I'll need to check that makes it through compatability with 10

I'm not really that fussed about any features, but from what I've read it'll take CPU and RAM use down a bit, which on an older machine might make it all feel a bit better

I have received the update notification on one of my win7 laptops but not on my other 2. They are all the same age and all running the same version of win7.
Any tips to,force the update invite to,come through?

I'm upgrading for the security updates and embedded start menu. Don't really care about anything else.

From the Microsoft website:

If you don’t see the Get Windows 10 app on your PC, it might be because:
1.Your device isn’t up-to-date with at least Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.
2.Windows Update is turned off or is not set to received updates automatically.
3.You’ve blocked or uninstalled the necessary Windows Update functionality.
4.Your device is not running genuine Windows.

Running Windows Update and installing any available updates will fix the first three issues. Need more help? Go to our Windows Community Forum.

PCs that we determine cannot run Windows 10 will not see the Get Windows 10 app before July 29, 2015. After July 29, 2015, we’ll enable the icon in the system tray. This is to help ensure that you can easily check your PC’s compatibility if you choose.

If your device is managed as part of a school or business network, please check with your IT administrator about upgrading to Windows 10.

^^ Thanks for that. Saved me looking. I've got an Asus T100 so not sure if it'll get it but I'm hopeful as I use it with my Nokia 735. This will be the first Windows release I'm actually looking forward to.

If you're not used to 8.1 then it will be quite a jump. You'll soon sound like one of those XP relics biggrin

Windows 8 when it came out, on a non touch device, was rough.

8.1 on a touch device is amazing, its pretty good once you are used to it and have it working your way on a non touch PC.

I'll be upgrading to 10 on my PC and buying a new machine too.

Anyone tried it as a virtual machine yet? I just haven't had time, but it would seem to be the best way to try it out. When I get round to it, I'll give it a whirl with Virtualbox.

This is my plan but I think I'll probably succumb to the "shiny new OS" temptation and put it on at least one of my machines.

I will, but not day 10 - I'll wait a few weeks and see what the fall-out is. I really like 8.1 and suspect 10 might be a bit of cross between 7 and 8.

I run Windows 10 (the latest 10162 build) on my Surface Pro 3 and my daily dell precision laptop. Both are extremely stable and Windows 10 is looking very much like a finished product at the moment. Much nicer than Windows 8.x all round.

I've been using it on VMWare and installed the programs I use often and everything seems to be running fine

Thanks for the help. I have already looked at this info from Microsoft and still cannot see why one laptop has received the update app, but the other 2 have not when they are all the same age and similar specs, all running the same version of win7 with full updates and all allowing automatic updates.

eta: I used the info on the site below and have now managed to get the update on all my laptops.

I've got 8.1 on my laptop and 7 on my desk top.

I'll probably go for the upgrade on the laptop and see how it goes.

I'd appreciate any recommendation for back up software for operating systems (C: drive). That's all I'll use it for.

To be honest, I dont store anything on my local drive that I dont have a backup for. It's actually the other way around, everything on my local drive is a backup of what's somewhere else.

I sync everything with Dropbox and Google for documents and photos, together with a USB drive. I'm screwed if Google and Dropbox go out of business and my house burns down, but all that happening in one go, I think I'd just accept it wasnt my day.

I'm thinking of cloning my drives before pulling the trigger as I can't imagine there will be an 'undo' option...

Both my machines (7 and 8.1) are showing as fully compatible now - the 8.1 laptop originally showed that 10 would break the Bluetooth but that appears to have been corrected now. In fact, now I think about it, putting the upgrade notification out to users was a great idea; it means they can check what's going to fail first before they release. I'll probably do the laptop and see how I get on as that's on 8.1 already (albeit with Classic Shell).

I hope MS get this right - if they don't, there'll be a lot of explaining to do!

Well, it was quiet in work this afternoon and I put the preview on my Surface Pro and it is actually very good. The handwriting recognition is still good and I really like the new browser. still getting used to the new taskbar options and the lack of swiping in from the right but it won't take long to pick it up IMO.

When it's released and I have time, just going to mirror my OS drive onto a seperate disk (OS partitions only 50GB~) and install it.

Push comes to shove I'll just wack the image back over the top and go back to 7.
