Afternoon all.

Hopefully someone here can assist with the below query..

I have recently built a pc for a friend.
Currently he is running 6 monitors off the R9 290 card. 3 off the DP port using a MST Hub ( all running 1920x1080) 1 from the HDMI running 1920x1080 and 1 each from the DVI ports running 1600x1200.

This has been working fine for a year or so..
Now he fancy's getting a 4k monitor to add to the mix, however, I'm not sure what the full capabilities of the card are in terms of running a 4k monitor at full res with other screens attached at same time.

So..
Querys are..

1- Does the 4k monitor need to be plugged into the display port or would it run full res from any other connection ?

2- If the 4k monitor is connected via DP, can the HDMI and DVI sockets also be used for screens - for a total of 4x screens ? - if yes, would the 4x screens all be able to run full resolution ?

3- If the 4k monitor will work at full res via the HDMI, could the MST hub still function with 3x monitors via the DP port and the 2x DVI sockets also taking the screens still to 6x monitors ?

4- As above but would the 4k monitor run at full res from one of the DVI sockets whilst the other DVI / HDMI and MST Hub via the DP are in use ?

I have spent alot of time trawling the net trying to find a reliable answer and cannot seem to find one..

Just for ref, he pc is running an AMD A8 octo core, 32gb of ram, 1TB SSD and the R9 290 graphics card. At the moment, he doesn't run any games, just needs alot of windows to display work charts etc..

Hope someone is able to help.
Thanks.
Dom

If the HDMI is version 1.4 it supports 4k at 30fps. If it's verson 2, it supports 4k at 60fps.
Unless the DVIs are dual-link they won't support 4k at all (although you may be able to link them both together to drive the screen).

The card supports all of the ports running simultaneously at their maximum resolutions. The performance is obviously going to drop with more pixels being pushed, but hopefully this won't be an issue with just desktop applications.

Your other option is to add a second graphics card just to run the 4k display - something as low end as an R7 250X (under £70) will have a displayport output and should run desktop apps without an issue.

Ah, never thought of that.. could be a good idea depending on available PCI slots on motherboard.
Will let you know whats decided and will post up a pic when sorted out..

Thanks
