So, I popped into John Lewis after work mainly to convince myself that the old model was all i needed. Am now typing away on a Mid-2014 Retina model with 256gb SSD and 8gb RAM. It's not quite the latest and greatest but got a significant discount (similar price to the US-sourced ebay 'old' models) as it was some sort of ex-display, ex-return model and I still get the JL 2 year warranty.

Very pleased with it - thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the Zenbook UX305 heads up. I found an Intel i7 version last night and pulled the trigger. The UX303 is basically the same, but with a much faster processor.

I always liked the retina, it's a great machine, but mostly because it's about the only machines in their range that aren't grossly overpriced.
When I read about a £1000 laptop with a poverty spec cpu, low res screen and a hdd, like the op had its sights set on first, it really makes me cringe.

I would have another retina myself but I need windows for the business and I never got everything to work 100% right on my previous ones.

I own a lot of apple kit, mostly as a happy user. Does that mean I can't speak up when I feel they're being lazy money grabbing s? smile

Tl;Dr :
I don't endorse brands, I endorse products.
