I've just replaced my old desktop, and have uploaded Windows 10. However, despite loading adblocker and (as far as I can tell) switching off ad pop ups, I'm still plagued by ads that open seemingly uncontrollably. They hover where I'm trying to click, and are driving me insane. Furthermore, I'm now seeing green links and underlining in keywords in ads that I've never had before.

Can someone please tell me how to make it all stop?

As an aside, the windows and tabs take ages to open, so I'm no further on than when I tried to improve the experience with a new comoputer. I'm using Mozilla Firefox. Am I missing something?

So far, this 'upgrade' has not gone well!

Try using a different browser, does that help?

If it does, then the issue is in Firefox.

type about:addons in the address bar (or click the addons manager in the toolbar) and check through the extensions and plugins. It may be that something is obviously wrong, it may not - if you can post an image of their names we can check them.

If that doesn't help, I'd go for an install of Malwarebytes, which now supports windows 10.

I've downloaded the malwarebytes, and things have got a little better. I think I've stopped the pop-ups. I am still getting the green linkages in normal thread content on PH though - any ideas?

Download and run both the following tools:

ADWCleaner
Junkware Removal Tool

They are much better at this particular brand of nasties compared to MalwareBytes. They'll remove all dodgy adware addons from browsers, the registry and the hard drive(s). Follow the instructions and reboot. You should be OK after that.

Also invest in a better antimalware suite and be careful what you download and run in future!

Try running spybot search and destroy.

Another good firefox addon for getting rid of ads is Ghostery.

Did the new computer come loaded with "free" stuff? Reading recently that certain makers are putting some shonky stuff on the machine.

Thanks chaps. I've downloaded those add-ons and they seem to have done the trick.

As for how it happened, it was all a consequence of first start up and loading Win 10 from 8 or whatever it was. All these windows open as it happens and one assumes (I know, I know) that it's all part of the proper download. Infuriating.

Hopefully now fixed - thanks for your help.

Problems with pop-up ads? Stop browsing dodgy websites or admit they are a fact of life and re-image your machine every 6 months. wink

The pop ups have nothing to do with Windows 10. More likely something dodgy installed whilst browsing or a virus has managed to get on your machine.

The advice above is pretty much spot on though.

Happens if you don't log in - a new PH "feature"...
