I was advised in order to get the best speeds I was not to use wireless but an Ethernet cable. With a cable I can get 80mbps, still way short of what is being posted here. My laptop will only connect to the 2g service and not the 5g service, could this be the issue?
I can get the 5g service as my phone connects to it.

Yes that will be why.I can get the 5g service as my phone connects to it.
My laptop only sees the 2.4 and gets 60-85 whereas my phone/tablet is on the 5g and gets 150+ all on wireless.
You may recall the slight sidetrack in this thread whilst we discussed the fact that I seemed to be pegged at 80 Mbps and why that may be.
I never did get round to investigating further, or taking my Draytek out of the equation, but tonight I re-ran Speedtest because I was getting some buffering on simple playback from an internet radio station.
Imagine my surprise when I got the following. And my even greater surprise when it was repeatable across several servers both Virgin and non-Virgin.

I only ever get 25-30Mbps out of Virgin these days despite supposedly being on their 152Mbps service.
No matter whether I'm on the 2G or 5G or using wired, or whether I speed test with Ookla or speedof.me.
Hopeless. I need to get around to telling them to only bill me for their lowest package since they're totally failing to deliver even what that promises.

I've been getting a (£12 I think) refund for each of the last few months because I complained on their support community about peaktime slowdowns. The network is due an upgrade in my area, which keeps getting pushed back, and they seem to automatically extend the refund each time they push it back.

(and why is it it better that the Superhub?)
The SH2 is very basic in terms of features, so that'd be one reason for using another more capable router. For example, I want to have time-based wifi access so I can lock the kids equipment out at 8pm, the Virgin box won't do that.I also found mine to be more stable when it's in modem mode.

Why? What do you think people will do with it?
Portscan at the least. DDoS if they felt stty. I'd no sooner post my public IP address than I'd publish my phone number or my bank account details. And let's not forget Jeremy Clarkson telling everyone his bank account number and sort code, safe in the knowledge that nobody could do anything with it.
Anyway, each to their own. I wouldn't publish my IP address.

So what router are you using?

Thanks - worth bearing in mind. My original Superhub was quite flakey at times and the Superhub 2 that replaced it also does some odd things. Drops, buffering, etc

I'm using an old Cisco box that I had lying around. I'm actually looking for something more modern at the moment, but haven't decided yet, and would also be interested in what others are using...So what router are you using?
