My PC is extremely powerful (and has a goatee, and is a Company Director in its own right) and my entire network is wired Gibabit end-to-end, so it's unlikely to be that. It's far more likely that 80 Mbps is the maximum that can be achieved for me geographically.

It's fibre to the cabinet and then coaxial cable from there to the Superhub. However, it's a very long run of coax as it has to go the length of the driveway and the entire length of my house, and then pretty much the width of my house too, since my home office would (by Sod's Law) be at pretty much the furthest point possible from the cabinet.
Ah! Understood. But I'd be curious to know anyway what I get with a direct wire to superhub. BTW I'm so close the cabinet I have to have an attenuator on the line!

Yes, indeed. I did do that test when I first got the kit but haven't since. I might re-run those tests this weekend.

The difference was fairly significant at the time I signed up. I don't know what it is now though. Plus I don't really need a landline anyway.
I just have internet and it 'should' be cheaper for me be on the package (internet/tv/phone) but I have a permanent discount on my account, 150mb for £28 a month.
Interesting, I have a landline sitting here on the 'Medium' package, very rarely use it, unless I have an 0800 number to call, even my old mum has started calling me on my mobile. I do have the TV as well, so all in I don't think I'd save by ditching the phone. I too get a 'discount' but over the years they have chipped away, I'm sure new customers are now getting better deals.

Me too. If he's only getting 80 from the superhub then time to pick up the phone and complain. If not then obviously the problem is downstream somewhere in the other kit. I had something similar happen with VM many moons ago when I had a free upgrade from (iirc) 10 to 20 meg. I thought "great!" but didn't pay any more attention to it at the time as I had a bunch of other kit downstream. I did discover quite some months later that I was still only getting 10 so rang them up and it transpired that the modem I had was ancient and wasn't capable of 20 meg so that's why I wasn't getting my prescribed amount. They sent me a new router and it was fine after that. I know there's been a few different versions of the SuperHub so that avenue might be worth investigating in case the variant you have is not compatible for the higher speeds perhaps?

It's a fair point.

You can bet your pants that if I phone them with my current config they'll say it's not their problem as I am using their kit in dumb modem mode. So really I need to get my DrayTek out of the circuit and have the Superhub3 running direct into the switch before kicking up a fuss.

Thanks for making me think, chaps. I guess I'd become a little complacent with my 80 Mbps and it would be rather nice to get a speed boost.

Yes, I get good bandwidth internally. On file transfers from my NAS box to my PC I can saturate the Gigabit ethernet.

However, I agree that it does seem a little odd. I've always assumed that I'd hit some kind of upper limit to do with the upstream kit rather than mine. Maybe I should investigate further.

I seem to remember that when I first got the kit I tested it both direct and also with the DrayTek and got the same 80 Mbps. I wanted to verify that it wasn't the DrayTek slowing things down. Maybe I need to repeat those tests?
I'd try direct into the Draytek first, if that doesn't speed up default the SuperHub and see what speed you can achieve directly connected.

Same here, up to 200 now, need a new Superhub though so they are sending one out; should be with me on Thursday.

It'll be interesting to see if our wifi is more stable with the new Superhub; in the last few months we have been having issues and having to reset the current Superhub on an almost daily basis, prior to these issues we've had a good decade of Virgin services with hardly any issues at all.

Are the new Superhubs 'new'.
I have what I believe is called a Super hub II which was miles better than the original (better WiFi signal).

I think the current one is SuperHub3 (unless there is now a 4)

Ours is now active, not that I can tell on this PC as the maximum I can achieve over wireless is 90Mbit.

The previous tenant had Sky with three sky+ boxes in a number of room so there are cable feeds all over the exterior of the house. My plan to run cat5 from my office along the outside wall and into the living room (through the existing hole where the Sky feed came in) to where the router is was foiled when the Virginmedia installer had the same fking idea and used the hole for the Virgin feed and then boxed it off mad

I had no idea they were upgrading speeds again; thanks to this thread I ordered through the website last Thursday morning. I received an email confirmation with an order number that day but having not received any follow up with delivery confirmation I called them today. Turns out my order wasn't actually on the system so I've confirmed it by phone now. Worth checking if you are in the same position.

I've done the upgrade but considering I don't get anywhere near the advertised 152MB as it is I'm not holding out much hope!

Mine was installed only last week and having just looked on the underside of the box it says "SuperHub 2ac". No wireless issues here to the other end of the house and I run a live internet stream 24/7 where I can see if my connection drops and it's only dropped once for about a minute over the past 9 days.

ETA: appears that the 2ac is more commonly known as the SuperHub 3 : Clicky.

I don't understand broadband speed.

The ISPs say 100mbs

The on-line testers say 10mbs

I tested mine at 12.69 Mb/s so does that mean 120mbs using the ISP's method?

Mb = Megabit.
MB = Megabyte.

Virgin's 100 "meg" service is 100 megabits per second (Mb/s) = 12.5 megabytes per second (MB/s).

few questions

1) will this boost UL because actually I find that to be the limiting factor a lot of times.

2) as my 100mbit service very rarely seems to operate at 100mbit and the latest superhub doesn't seem particularly brilliant with its WiFi speeds anyway.... will these improvements make it any better?
