What spec did you go for?

How about going for the 'basic' 5K, with a 1TB fusion drive?

£2,200 is certainly a lot to spend on a computer, but I think you can get a decent enough spec for £1,600.

I've gone big! hehe

i7, 16gb RAM, 4gb video card and a 3TB Fusion drive. Saved £200 via the Education Store. In for a penny, in for a pound!

Yep, that's what I'll be doing if I go for the 27. Standard model but with the 256GB flash storage will do me fine and I'll upgrade the RAM myself for £40.

Can you still get to the RAM on the newer models? Apple have been phasing it out consistently with their entire model range... And if you can, can you do the same for the SSD?

Yes, you can still access the RAM. But only the RAM, not the SSD.

Yes RAM upgrades still possible on the 27, but not the 21.5. SSD unfortunately has to be specced at time of order - I don't yet know if there are any options to upgrade or even if there's a sata cable accessible.

Unless you are out of warranty and feel adventurous. I plumbed for the 21.5 as space allowed (should have gone 27 and re arranged stuff). But I had to max that out from new. Wonder how many bought the 21" not realising.

thx, useful info. Wonder how long that'll last though. As you pointed out, a stick of RAM isn't that expensive.

Same as me, accept I went for 3TB drive and 16gb RAM - thought if I need to I'll buy some more at a later date and stick it in myself. In hindsight should have just got 8gb and saved £100!

8GB is prob 2x4GB
16 is 2x8

So upping to 32GB is easier with the 16GB config.

Off topic: is this the most expensive "home computer" you can actually spec? And is the GPU a mobile one?

Remember too that a 4K screen is only a quarter of the resolution of the 5k on the Mac (IIRC, althoug may be corrected on that!).
Just to correct this,
4K = 3840 x 2160, 4 Full HD resolutions next to each other.
5K = 5120 x 2880, 4 1440p resolutions next to each other.

So a 1440p screen is 1/4 of a 5k screen.
That doesn't take away from the fact that 5k has almost 80% more pixels than 4k. Impressive that Apple manages to run this smoothly from a 2012 mid-range GPU!

Fairly sure it only has 2 RAM slots but may be wrong.

I imagine it is, other than the Mac Pro but I'd be tempted not to count it as its industry grade.

The GPU is a mobile one yes, as is the CPU I believe, it's essentially a very power hungry laptop.
