Hi folks

I've been an "on and off gamer" for more than 30 years....starting with an Atari 400 many many years ago !!! Had PS1, and still have PS2 and 3..but they do get more use from my 12 year old now !

Never was an early adopter of the newest machines but seriously considering the PS4 as a treat for me (and my son !) around Xmas time. As I've always been with the Sony franchise I'm not interested in any other "options" :-).

So...
1) Are the best deals ALWAYS bundles before Xmas ? I don't mind waiting until after if it means a better deal ? Never purchased anything around what is now called "Black Friday".....but is it likely the best deal really will be this week ?
2) Having done some background reading...how can I ensure whatever I buy will be the new CUH 1200 chassis and not an old one ? Has all the old stock sold through or do you expect the bigger retailers (Tesco / Amazon or other major suppliers) to still be offloading the old one through Xmas Black Friday ?

Thanks for your help.....

to be honest ive got one of the first ps4s having brought it at christmas 2014. the new chassis is supposed to be quieter lighter and more efficient. Honestly? The old one isnt as noisy as the complaints levelled against it. as far as getting the right one? the newer chassis is all matte on the front panel rather than gloss.

I'm look as well for a treat for the boy and I.

Is a 1TB worth going for over a 500gb? Most AAA games on my PC seem to be 25-30gb (mad max, alien, FO4) so I should get 10 game sin 500gb. I won't be using it to download or store movies or music as I have those covered elsewhere although i may use if for streaming. Does the PS4 load the whole game to the hdd or play content from disc.

I have literally just got mine. I decided on the 1TB CUH-1216B with the Battlefront bundle. Got it for £270 from Gamestop.

I think the Black Friday deals might be similar but don't buy much more expensive than that as I'm sure the prices are starting to drop now.

Having kept an eye out for consoles for myself and nephews in the past I found the best deals to be before Christmas and not after. This was pre Black Friday fad as well.

Go for the star wars bundle with special edition 1TB PS4.

It's not the cheapest deal out there but it's the coolest!

Shame on you! Iv still got mine with games on it labeled £49.99. I shudder at the thought of what these cost... my mum for christmas all those years ago lol

Costco has ps4's in for £239 including vat the other weekend in edinburgh. Thought that was decent.

That is a good price.
We have a Costco card but nothing listed on the website, looks like I might need to visit.

Any of the recent bundles or 1Tb console are definitely the new chassis.

On the subject of PS4's, is it true that you cannot play PS3 games on a PS4? If so that is ridiculous !

True.

To be honest, when you break down the cost of these machines, they are absolutely brilliant value (I played MGS for 120+ hours - 37% complete for example), therefore pick which ever bundle suits you best. I'd try and look for one with extra controllers, games always crash in price sooner or later, the controllers rarely go sub £35 smile

Some of the best games have been remastered, hundreds of others are available using the PS Now service, but it relies on a decent internet connection.

The PS3 architecture was notoriously difficult to code for, and as such the PS4 is nothing like the PS3, so for it to be backwards compatible would be a monumental effort, it might not even be powerful enough to run emulation. It's nowhere near as simple as it first sounds.

The original PS3 was only backwards compatible because it effectively had a PS2 chip inside that did the PS1/PS2 games. When they dropped that chip to lower the cost, backwards compatibility was also lost.

It's just not a priority any more, and therefore not worth them spending money on. Looking back historically the PS2 was the first backwards compatible console, the Wii carried it forward and I think the WiiU still plays GameCube games? Microsoft have started slowly adding 360 emulation on the Xbox One, but have to do it on a game by game basis to optimise the code and get it to run how it did.

The xbox doesn't actually do emulation it just reads the disc and uses it as a key and then downloads a version that will work. It's free for the games you own.
The PlayStation has PS Now that allows streaming of older PS3 games (netflix for games basically) at a cost.

Unless they've completely re-written the games for Xbox One, it's emulation.

Quieter? we bought our PS4 over a year ago, and I never notice any noise....not compared to the Xbox 360 sat next to it............
