Zip Drive / Plethora of cables

Bloke next door popped in yesterday to see if I had a FDD he could borrow, that's why I keep things!

Got several boxes, have been having a big clear out though, gave away a huge Fujitsu server case on Monday.
Got about a dozen HDDs to destroy & dispose of, will probably bash them with a lump hammer though!

I have drawers and a loft full of this stuff, including whole PCs and graphics cards right back to a Riva 128 and a Voodoo 2. My wife threw out the CRT monitors, including two Sony F520s that cost £900 each! She was right to do so. I never would have done it, but I'd also never have used them again.

Well done. I used a sledgehammer, and it took enough pounding just to break the casing, although I was being cautious in trying to reduce the amount of shrapnel.

Bit late to the scene (mid 90s). It was one-of-those with a removable caddy. I dad a couple of Philips IDE drives given to me and from what I remember they failed due to the laser module. Common fault back then.

Nobody seemed to want SCSI stuff so armed with this and an Adaptec controller card and a pirate version of Nero...

I still have my first CD I burnt called 'backup 1' and it's full of software after a night of dialup downloading.

Anyone need a 5 1/4 360k floppy drive or a 28.8k external modem?

Ah fair enough, I had a standard IDE Hp cd writer (2x from memory) that cost £330 then. It's still on the attic somewhere. Buffer underrun galore.

I'm not in "IT" but have used it for a long time.

Messing about with config.sys and autoexec.bat files when you have no idea what you are doing to make Doom run is an enduring memory for me.

In the late 90's I bought a CD burner that piggy backed off the old printer port. Cost me about £500 back then and I only used it a few times as it was such a faff. I only bought it to make music CD's for the car, oh what a nightmare that turned out to be. It is in the loft as I haven't got the nerve to sling it.

It is amazing how things have moved on though.

Oh yes ... as I look at my 128GB MicroSD card that is the size of my little fingernail.

What gets me though is despite processor power / storage doubling every 18 months or whatever the figure over the last 15 or so years, the computing experience (as a dumb user, as said I'm not in IT) largely seems the same.

I know that isn't the case and in reality we can do much much more now, but to me Win8 or 10 feels no different to 98 or XP.

I would have happily continued to use XP.

Did I mention that I'm but a dumb user.
