Best way to install Infinity?
Discussion
On the question of modems and HH5......
I had a seperate modem and router at the last but one house and at my last house was a combined HH5. Apart from a daily drop out or two where I lose Internet for a minute the HH5 has given me no cause for concern. (I cannot remember if the seperate modem/HH5 was more reliable as its over 5 years ago).
I've now moved again and due to a variety of reasons will get my phone line and standard BB installed this Friday and then I'll have to separately upgrade to Infinity once that's up and running.
So the question, in preparation for Infinity, is this: were my old Internet drop outs caused by problems on the BT network or the HH5? Would a seperate modem result in a much more stable connection and thus probably faster over time?
If this is the case, can I buy any modem or does it need to be an Openreach one?
Lastly, if I go that route what's the best router to get?
If it makes any difference at all to the answers, my master socket is located inside a network cabinet right next to a Netgear switch which feeds various Cat 5 cables around the house. The builder was good enough to do all the infrastructure during the build
TL:DR - definitely best to go modem and router rather than HH5? Can I use any modem or only Openreach one?

So the ssfp has an rj45 socket?
No but it has an idc connection to enable a data extn to be connected .mph1977 said:
if openreach have to update the master socket , asking the openreach person who comes to do the install will do no harm at all
people suggesting moving the master socket , especially in newer properties or where Openreach have done work in the recent past run the risk of being charged for 'correcting an illegal installation' ... ( all depends what is on the record for the property - if the only thing that has been done in living memory is changing to plug in then illegally mod away before they come and hope you get away with it )
In 20+ years I've yet to hear of someone getting any hassle what so ever.people suggesting moving the master socket , especially in newer properties or where Openreach have done work in the recent past run the risk of being charged for 'correcting an illegal installation' ... We have to get service first... which is not happening at present! I often heard stories about the hassle people have getting infinity installed and it seems I am one of the unlucky ones. No one turned up yesterday, no e-mail or update from BT. I tried the online chat 4 or 5 times during the day and in the end my laptop battery went flat...
Phoned last night to speak to a chap in India who reckons there is a problem (no st) and they will have it on today... I some how doubt that but will wait and see. After today I guess I am looking at next week due to weekend.

It's not just getting infinity that's an issue.
I moved into a newly completed barn conversion on Dec 22 after completing on the 18th. Phone line and broadband ordered on 18th (infinity is in the cabinet but the ordering system would not let me order it at the time ).
After 3 seperate visits from engineers and a regional manager - none of whom had the correct information and therefore the correct equipment - BT on multiple seperate occasions emailed and texted me to tell me I would have a service on 11th Jan, 12th Feb, 13th Feb, 25th Feb and 3rd March.
I finally got connected on Monday (15th Feb) only after refusing to get off the phone with customer support in India the week before (following a text 12 hours before my 3rd engineer appointment telling me that was cancelled and the next review would be 25th Feb) and demanding someone senior in Openreach get on the line.
I emailed the MD of BT (the person whose name was on all the emails) along with CEO of BT and Openreach yesterday morning and have now got a special services team looking into the fiasco!
Painful does not even begin to cover it.

There's nothing to correct if it's done right. I deal with OR engineers day in day out, not one has ever had an issue with the move of an NTE. Are you seriously suggesting OR have a record of exactly where an NTE is located in each household?!
hence the reason there is so little enforcment action - as the records are either crap and/or on paper ... mph1977 said:

There really isn't any hope required, they don't give two sts if the correct socket is used along with the correct cable. Even if that wasn't the case I doubt very much they would care.
OP I hope you get the situation sorted soon.

The online help is not the best, get through to someone after 5 mins they say they need to send me to orders and then I get "searching for an available agent" until the end of time. Tried 4 or 5 times now.
Do what I did, call 0800 800 150 and refuse to get off the line once you are through Gassing Station | Computers, Gadgets & Stuff | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
