I'm using the play music one which I really like, but it's in combination with a Full Access account so I don't know how it performs using local files.
Can always give it a go.

You sure you dont have a problem with your phone? The S6 is a powerful phone and shouldnt crash playing music. 2 Different apps crashing could point towards your phone.
If not, the Google Music app works fine and stores all your music online for free.

Good point, glossed over that!

As said, you can upload all your music to the google cloud then play it on your phone. At least it will fix it if the files are corrupt.

i'd hope its not the phone since i've not had it a month yet.

i dont have a problem with storing it offline, its the listening offline that becomes an issue. have had a google and it seems to be an issue for a number of people and with several different fixes, bah!

I use Poweramp, and it's very good, although all my music is on an SD card so it might be less useful for you.

What exactly happens?

Does the song just stop playing or does the app/phone crash?

How did the music get onto the phone?

Are you playing music copied to you phone or downloaded from somewhere?

Do you have Amazon Prime?

If so, have you tried downloading from Prime for use offline?

Is there any way that when connected to your network the music is being played from your network and that when disconnected a corrupt local copy is being accessed?

I use Kodi on my Samsung Note 8 tablet for both films and music.

This device plays music (and soundtracks) at a stupidly low level. Kodi allows you to boost the volume significantly should your S6 have the same issue.

I had apple music on mine, and it was shyte. I tried spotify instead and it's a complete revelation. It's so much better to use, and simpler. Occasionally the song lags a little in the car, but I think that's down to a bad connection as when I take it out of my pocket, it's fine.

https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/6317786?hl=en

Where the family plan is available
Australia
Canada
France
Germany
United Kingdom
United States
Note: Every family member must be in the same country.

Open the Play Music app on your Android device Google Play Music Icon. You can't set up a family from an iOS device or a browser.
In the top left corner, touch the Menu icon Google Play Music Menu icon.
Touch Settings > Upgrade to family plan > Set up family > Get started > Continue.
Select the payment method for your family's purchases. You can either select an existing credit card, or add a new one.
Touch Accept.
Invite members to your family. Make sure you only invite trusted family members since you'll be responsible for purchases they make with the family payment method. Invitations can be sent either by email or text message.
Touch Invite > Continue > Continue > Subscribe.
Touch Continue > Continue music purchase.
Select the payment method you want to use for your family's subscription.
Touch Subscribe.
When new people join your family, you'll get an email confirmation.

i do appreciate the way you can mess with equalisers and stuff in poweramp.

I use the Play Music app, it's actually pretty reasonable. Google just increased the song limit to 50,000 (so now only slightly below what I have) but uploading that lot will take a while... I wonder why they don't 'match' the content like Apple do - copyright reasons perhaps?

The only slightly irritating thing about the Play Music app is that when you open it it defaults to 'Listen Now' rather than the music library and there doesn't seem to be a way to change it. I'd also like a way to manually edit album art within the app rather than having to pull the files off the phone, embed the art in the tags and copy back to the phone (for some reason it's not possible to use MP3Tag for files already on the phone).

Other than that it's not a bad app.

Edit: I use JRiver ( https://www.jriver.com/audio.html ) at home for audio playback which also enables me to stream all of my music to my phone/tablet etc - it even handles FLAC-to-MP3 transcoding on-the-fly as well. The app is called Gizmo ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jriv... ) and the JRiver software is excellent for playback at home. Gizmo can also remotely control any connected/sync'd JRiver instance too.

I'm fortunate that 4G coverage where I am is excellent and whilst I do have a chunk of music on my phone locally for low-signal situations, Gizmo is how I play most of the music in the car etc.

How did the music get onto the phone? < copied over when upgraded, smart switch thing

Are you playing music copied to you phone or downloaded from somewhere? <copied

Do you have Amazon Prime? < nope

If so, have you tried downloading from Prime for use offline?

Is there any way that when connected to your network the music is being played from your network and that when disconnected a corrupt local copy is being accessed? <its possible but i'm playing from the offline list so am stumped atm.
i'm at the point of copying it all to google drive, wiping all music off the phone and dl again if i cant sort it any other way!

have checked and its the same whether i use google play, amazon music or the phones own music player, and no matter which song is playing it does the same thing :/

I'd connect the phone to a PC with the USB lead and copy over a track from the PC. See if that behaves.

If it does, then it's likely related to the way the music arrived on the phone during the upgrade.

Also worth dragging a track from the phone back to the PC - see if it plays on the PC correctly

Sounds like it's your phone to me. I'd try a factory reset after copying everything off.

Once back.... jetAudio is my current player of choice. Fast, simple, plays all formats I use including Apple lossless. Tried a good dozen players and this works for me (using the free version currently).

I'm not a fan of online audio apps.
