I've a windows 8.1 laptop that shut down fine the last time I used it but now fails to boot up. Usually when I switch it on it comes up with 'asus' ( brand name)within seconds then goes to coloured screen wanting me to press enter, then add password to log in.
This time it's just a dark screen and the cursor can move around but none of the keys work.
I had this problem last month and took it to a repair man who fixed it for £50, and I will be contacting him again later this morning to repair it again. However I can't keep paying £50 each time it fails to boot up - can anyone hear suggest how I can fix the fault myself?
I did ask computer repair man last month how he fixed it but he wouldn't tell me.

so do you still get the Asus splash screen at the start? at what point does the laptop fail? does it start loading windows at all or not?

Something quick you can try is repeatedly tapping F8 while booting to see if it loads the boot options menu. Try starting it in safe mode and if that works do it again and choose "Last known good config".

No, I don't get the splash screen at the start.
Tried the f8 option but nothing happened.
Am dropping the laptop round to the repair man now - he's off to look at his paperwork to see what he did last time.

Laptop is back up and running smile repairman didn't charge me as it was a recurrence of the previous problem.

Seems the laptop had settled into a 'sleep' mode then wouldn't wake up. The cure if anyone else has this problem is to remove laptop battery so it resets itself, then plug in the charger without battery and restart it.
I always unplug the laptop charger if I'm not using the laptop, if I haven't shut down correctly then the laptop stays on ( without me knowing) using the battery for power - which if I then power up using the 'on' button within an hour of prior use actually sends it to sleep. Sleep seems to be the default if the laptop using battery power hasn't been touched for an hour - this has now been changed in the settings to 'shut down' instead.

Hopefully that might help someone else if they have a similar issue.

That all makes sense. Sorry for not replying sooner. Glad you got it sorted without being charged.
