I've got a Nexus 5 that I'm very happy with but the power socket is playing up so probably time for a new phone.

Nexus 5X is the default replacement choice. Nexus 6P is larger (which I don't need or want) and more expensive (which I'm happy to pay if its worth the extra money). Stock Android is desirable

OnePlus 2 seems to be higher spec and lower price, but uses a variation of Android, and a cursory glance of reviews is littered with phrases like 'unstable' etc.

Any thoughts from owners of any of these or suitable alternatives would be welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried a new cable? A few months ago my phone stopped charging , both in the car and at home.I was rather disappointed as it was just over twelve months old and I was happy with it otherwise.
I was issued with a tablet from work and tried that.it was fine.

II went from Nexus 4, to 5 and now 5X - really like it. Faster and smoother than the 5 yet better battery life too.
Just be aware it's the new fangled USB socket so old charger/cables won't be of use. 2A charger is awesome; flat to full in about 30-60 minutes.

I made the move to a Nexus 6P after having HTCs since the very first Android phone way back (T-Mobile G1 if you're interested). Very happy with it so far, had it about a month.

Bought a 5x a few days ago with Google Fi.

I'm happy with it - I previously had a SG5 which I liked a lot, followed by a Moto E. The 5x is essentially a newer SG5 with a similar size and spec (better processor is the main difference).

It was a little arsey while it updated itself, but is 100% now.

I bought a couple of tested/reviewed usb C to micro usb converters on amazon for $7 so I can reuse data cables and chargers and I'll probably buy a couple more at some point, to allow me to have a charger anywhere I need one; office, bedroom, car, living room, etc.

It's a decent middle range phone. Not up there with the latest and greatest flagships, but a decent spec and not too big.

As a OnePlus 2 owner (and previous One owner) I would go with a Nexus. You can't trust the updates that OnePlus push out and they're in no rush to hotfix major bugs. They did much better when they partnered with Cyanogen. Shame really.

Thanks guys, that sounds fairly unanimous - 5X.

Sorry to hear that the OnePlus2 is not so good zeDuffMan, and thanks for the steer - haven't found many owners.

Also jas xjr and eps, yes I tried various permutations of power source and lead. Sometimes it charges. Sometimes it doesn't.

Another vote for the Nexus. I haven't tried one, but I've had Nexus devices in the past and loved them, vanilla Android is a lovely OS.

The actual OP2 phone is great and has some lovely touches but the software was junk compared to the Cyanogen OS the OPO used to use. A great shame really.

Difficult to believe they're reviewing the same phone - my 5X lasts two days between charges with moderate usage and 4-5 days with just email and messaging while on holiday.

Quite. Good all round mid-range/price phone IMO. Great camera outweighs substandard speaker for me.

Reading that is quite concerning. Luckily, I didn't buy the 5X and purchased an older Sony Z Ultra instead and turned it into a sort of GPE version which is much nicer with a larger screen.

If the 808 struggles on the 5X, what will it be like on the handsets then? Or is this specifically an issue with MM on the 808?

neither

The Moto X style is what the Nexus 5x should have been had Motorola made the N5x

I have both the 5x and Moto X Style

Same 808 cpu, but more 1GB of ram.

the style is way better

The 808 in the N5x is capped at 1.4ghz and throttles down hard after 2 minutes hard use to just 600mhz, and then about 5 minutes later shuts down the 2 big cores and relies on the small 4 cores.

The Moto X Style runs the cores at the full 1.8ghz, has much better cooling and an extra 1GB of ram, 3 vs 2, even though its driving a higher res screen it flys compared to the N5x

Having read that and having also owned a 5X for a few months now I can hand-on-heart say my experience with it is not the same as theirs. I have no idea what "performance issues" they're talking about, mine is slick and smooth at all times. The only niggle I've had with mine is that some apps need to be disabled for battery optimization (Facebook and GMail in my case) to work properly. I'd sort of expect that from Facebook, their Android app has never been the best piece of software out there, but it's almost comical that GMail needs it (the issue there is that it stops syncing automatically if battery optimization is enabled).

Would I recommend it? Yes, unless you are a published phone blogger, in which case there's just no pleasing you at all.

I went from Nexus 5 to Nexus 6P, though a good number of my colleagues now have a 5X. Opinions amongst them are pretty uniformly positive- unless you're a gamer or a full-on power user it really does pretty much everything you could want out of a phone. None seem to have experienced the "issues" that some of those Android Central reviewers are reporting such as app instability or poor performance, though YMMV.

A few have also had OnePlus Twos, but not a single one of them has kept it for more than a few month- largely due to some seriously patchy build issues and incredibly buggy OS. In fact, most people I know with OnePlus devices in general are now looking to move away from them due to persistent, niggling issues.

I will echo that the Moto X Style is an excellent alternative, I toyed with one and the larger Moto X Force before settling on the 6P. Mind you I got my 6P very cheap.
