is there a software difference and, if so, is it significant in terms of performance?

Software difference is the ability to use multiple static address in the public IP range.
That should have no impact on the wireless performance.

The software on the Business Hub5 is basically the same software from the Business Hub3 but modified slightly. The Business Hub3 software got gradually worse the more it was fiddled with by BT so this hasn't helped the business Hub5.

Uncertain if the same was done with the residential version as they are separate ISP's but wouldn't be surprised.

Been through all this with BT recently....they blamed slow speeds on, the kettle, trains going by, the tv, other appliances, moisture in cables ....it was a problem in the green box up the road

Speed into the hub is fine. Ethernet cable connection proves this.

Referring back to your first post, what are you using to check the speeds?

At my desk I'm connected to HH5 via cable through the laptop's docking station, but I'm now about 30 feet away, on a different floor, and the laptop is indicating full wifi strength and full 802.11g (I think it's g) speed of 54Mbps. This is on an 8yr old Thinkpad.

I use BT wholesale speed test as it's the only one they believe.

Sounds like a dodgy HH5, you've tried everything you can to sort it. Have they offered you a replacement?

So you lose 20mbps over what distance? I lose over 30mbps over 6 inches

I said 30 feet earlier but it's probably more like 25 in a straight line. Router is buried behind a pile of books so the signal has got to get through them, and then through the floor.

As also said earlier, the only non-standard thing I've done is to turn the 5Ghz wifi off. That does leave an amber wifi icon illuminated on the HH5 but I can't see it anyway.

Have you tried different devices to eliminate a problem with the wifi in the client?

What is the signal strength v distance like? If you can compare old and new hubs to see if there are difference.

If there is significant differences in signal then the anteena could be faulty or just disconnected internally.

I have a HH5 and it is crap so don't really look at it so not sure if there is transmitter power setting but worth checking.
