After events of recent days I needed some retail therapy, I just ordered one.

Oneplus reckons shipping date will be July 2nd, I'm hoping they're just being pessimistic.

Do these have the equivalent of an iPhone personal hotspot, so I can run an iPad off it in an emergency?

You mean set up a local WiFi hotspot using the phone's 3G/4G?

Yes. I have never used it with iPads or iPhones though only my MBP in a squeeze but it should work with any device.

I ordered on June 16th, phone hadn't been shipped by 23rd so filed a PayPal dispute. There's talk on the forums about people who ordered in The Loop (the pre-launch event) that are still waiting. Seems like if you order just the phone with no accessories you might have more luck.

EDIT: I still haven't got my refund incidentally - had to escalate it to a claim

Mine was due to ship yesterday but got an email saying it was delayed until first week of July.

Beginning to wish I hadn't bothered ordering it as the whole process had been a joke. Takes over a week for support tickets to be answered. Can't part cancel orders that haven't even been packed and clearly the items aren't available!

Humm, that doesn't surprise me but still slightly worries me. It was a phone only and they now reckon the shipping date will be Thursday. We shall see.

They're deluged with orders, and depending on who you speak to they don't even have UK stock, but are still taking orders with money taken up front.

I have been speaking to their Live Chat support for the past week or more and have just been lied to repeatedly. My order has at various times been on its way to the warehouse (?) for delivery, just about to be shipped, etc. When I filed the PayPal dispute and went onto chat my order was definitely-this-time about to be shipped. They asked me to cancel the dispute so they could update my order. Fortunately I am very familiar with the e-commerce system they use so I knew that was more bullst. It was simply a ploy to weaken my position of negotiating a refund (since you can't reopen a dispute)

I currently have a OnePlus One that developed a physical fault after 1.5 years (the glass is coming away from the touchscreen underneath as the glue is failing leading to the bottom 1/3rd of the screen being unresponsive to touches) and I have had to jump through hoops to get it RMA'd. Initially they made a point of telling me their policy on accidental damage or misuse not being covered by warranty, with no further information on how to progress the RMA. At one point they asked me to do a factory reset - this is after I provided several photos of the obvious physical damage). I have near zero confidence that it'll be fixed any time soon, or that they won't simply accuse me of damaging it myself.

They are great cheap phones, with compromises that can be difficult to ignore. Their customer service however is horrific, easily the worst I've experienced. If you luck out and get a perfect phone on day one (there are reports of quality control issues like yellow tinted screens, air bubbles under glass, poor packing materials leading to damage, etc) then you'll only have to put up with the various shortcomings, more of which seem to be being discovered daily. If you are unlucky enough to get a imperfect or DOA phone - you're likely in for a world of pain that'll make the cost savings the phone represents over the competition feel like a false economy.

Yeah, I remember that happening with my OP2, it kept being 'about to be shipped' and the live chat was just live lies.

I've been very very lucky with every bit of electronics I've ever bought, I really rely on that luck and buy a lot of 'grey import' stuff from HK. I'm hoping that's the case with the 3, as you say Durzel, it'll almost impossible to get it solved.

Well, I'll see how it goes and report back to this thread when (if?) I get it. I know I said earlier that time is a great healer when it came to my past issues with OP but if they screw it up this time then that really will be that.

Being brutal about it this comment found on one of the many bad experience blogs sums it up rather well:
some guy said:
people don't seem to get it. OnePlus, Huawei, etc... these were brands that just a few years ago used to sell 50 dollar smartphones shipped from China. They all had horrible 2 star reviews on Amazon and nobody would buy those phones calling them "cheap Chinese junk".

Now that they slap on some pretty skins and metal edges and decide to run Cyanogen mod they're suddenly a quality company? No. They're still manufacturing the same junk phones from the same junk factories. Stick with established companies that have been in the smartphone flagship business for years. LG, Motorola, HTC, Samsung, etc.
Now, I don't agree that these companies are inherently dishonest, or they aren't capable of delivering products. The OnePlus was at its launch genuinely a "flagship killer", but it too was plagued with QC issues and premature failures (I've never previously owned a phone where the glue has failed between the screen).

There is certainly some truth to the belief that OnePlus are punching above their weight, and these botched launches and woeful customer service are good evidence of this. There is a tendency for people to get caught up in the hype and truly believe that OnePlus are somehow blowing the whole industry away from within with honest, cost price materials with savings passed on to the consumers. Alternatively, as seems far more likely, they really are just using cheaper parts than the competition and cutting corners on customer service etc.

Someones not very impressed with Oneplus eh? hehe

I don't agree with some guys post though, Huawei has been steadily improving and make some good phones now, I don't hear anyone criticising the quality of the 6P. Oneplus was a start up, and never sold super cheap phones. For what you pay I think Oneplus does a pretty good job.

Because thats the thing isn't it? The OP3 has all the newest hardware except for maybe the screen (but really, if you're not using VR then 400ppi is enough) and yet costs considerably less than the 'premium' equivalents. Of course corners will be cut somewhere and in this case it's after sale services and possibly QC. All my OP phones have been flawless build wise so I can't comment on that, but I've seen stories similar to yours on various forums.

It sounds like OP have has issues with Oxygen OS on the OP2 but not so much the OPX, I know I wasn't impressed by it last time I used it but I'll see how it goes this time. Anyway, it's not as if my 'premium' Samsung S6 is great in this regard, the software and battery are crap.

£309 is a large amount of money for me being a student, but if I look at it relative to what else is out there it's worth the risk. If I wanted flawless QC and aftersales service I'd spend an extra £390 (!) and buy an iPhone. Hell, even a Nexus 6P is 33% more expensive.

Fair points.

I think the issue for me, having gone through this loop, is not so much whether it's worth saving £200-£300 over the competition, rather if things go wrong am I going to have a £300 paperweight because the customer service decides after 2 months of unanswered ticket messages that I damaged it? Or equally is the saving worth the grief of having to go through that process when the likes of Google, Samsung, Apple et al are effortless by comparison?

Also, personally, I need my phone to work. Not having one for weeks or months while they sit on it isn't really an option. I took a punt on the OnePlus because at the time I had a Nexus 4 to fall back on. Knowing what I know now in wouldn't buy one unless I was prepared to write off the cost if it came to it and/or be without it for an indefinite period if it became faulty.

To be honest, I don't actually think it is worth the hassle but I really wanted something new and shiny, I'm heavily relying on my luck to get me a fault free device. biggrin

I hope that Oneplus can produce some half decent software this time, they've had over a year to get Oxygen OS right.

Having slept on it for a couple of days, i decided to cancel my order. I can forsee issues further down the road and my experience with their ticket system doesnt fill me with confidence that i wont end up with an expensive brick if there are issues with the handset.

Blimey you lot are impatient. I see your points but they're a small company, you're not going to get Apple levels of response time. And they've had overwhelming demand for the OP3, hence the delays on delivery.

Wait times are fine. Being lied to and told that your phone is definitely going to be shipped tomorrow or that a representative will be in touch in 30 minutes, an hour, 24 hours (what I've been told on a variety of occasions) isn't.

[sarcasm]Wow, OnePlus apologising for delayed orders... who'da thunk it!![/sarcasm]

It's all just a little case of history repeating!

I've decided the OP2 is my last Android phone, I'm gonna move back over to iPhone when the 7 comes out.

Gave up waiting for talkmobile to send me a new sim card and butchered my old one down to the right size.

Had to play around with the APN settings to get mobile data to work but otherwise it's all good now.

Really enjoying the phone, haven't found anything I don't like about it yet. I'm coming from an iPhone 4S though which was woefully slow so you could day I would have been easily pleased though. :P
