OP, from what you said about your mum, an android phone is out. She sounds like using a touch screen would be trouble. My old Nokia would be ideal. Slide open to make or answer a call; slide shut to end call. The last thing you want is calls not being ended, meaning credit going out the window or not being able to reach her because of an open call.

Actually, now that I think about it, my mum doesn't use a PC or tablet as it's too complicated for her. She's slowly got to grips with an old style mobile phone. In fact, she uses my old 3210. She also has a relatively new but basic Samsung something.

The mercury is on my show to her list. I like how it has a holster. Makes things that bit more simple.

I'm in a tricky situation here.
She has agreed to have a mobile but it is reluctantly.
She would happily end her life having never owned or used one for that matter and I am fairly certain that it will spend most of it's time left in the house but I have to try.

I know if I throw a techy phone at her it will sit in a drawer.

Having been through similar with my grandparents some years back, I suspect the hardest part will not be the simplicity of the product but actually ensuring they carry it.

Not knowing the whole situation you may want to look at "wearables" like pendants, though of course you face the same issue where it's only useful if it's being worn.
