Hi,

I have a problem with a 15" Macbook Pro from Mid 2010 where it will randomly crash to a black screen and will restart. I believe the 2011 Macbook Pro has a similar fault that Apple has put out a fix for that's to do with the Logic Board/GPU.. I'm guessing this may be the same issue but I wanted to get some advice before doing a fix/replacing parts?

When not connected to an external monitor I could go for hours without it happening, but once it's hooked up to an External monitor via Mini-Display port it could crash a few times in a row followed by a long period of not crashing.

Using some intensive software is almost guaranteed to initiate a crash (regardless if external monitor is used) - including Powerpoint, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro X. Sometimes using Finder to search through many large files will also do it. Sometimes I will run Logic/Final Cut for hours without fault.

If I use bootcamp and run Windows 7 it will attempt to crash, and give an error window about a kernel panic but it will not crash and instead the screen will go black for a second before returning to normal. Windows 7 will not crash under any circumstances.

It's quite erratic but ultimately seems to crash when the GPU is being heavily used. Is it possible that this could be anything other than the GPU/Logic Board? Could faulty RAM or the HD also do it?

I captured the crash log from the most recent crash/restart.. It makes a note of a GPU kernel panic but to be honest it doesn't make much sense to me.

Anyone have any advice - is a workaround possible - it's an old laptop but it's still quite useful (when it does work). I've tried selecting 'use dedicated GPU' in system preferences but doesn't seem to have much effect, and it resets after each crash anyway.

If this fix is to replace the logic board - is it possible to upgrade to Logic Board with a better processor/GPU from 2010 without any issues?

Thanks

Sounds like it could be a thermal safeguard.
Are you sure the fans are still in working order? Any significant heat generated? Maybe a diagnostics tool that shows the temps?

There is a fix because mine was done under warranty as you mentioned. I presume the new logic boards have an update. Gettin hold of a brand new one with the fix will be tricky...

Could be dodgy memory. I had similar symptoms on my 2009 iMac. I ran a memory check utility which crashed it, then took out the two original memory modules leaving in the later crucial 8gb and it has been fine ever since.

That would be my first test, along with opening it up for a good clean. The zero cost option...

if its never been opened there is a good chance the fans are a dirty mess and will need a damn good clean and can't dissipate the heat properly.

Yep sounds like could be rebooting for heat could be the reason, but it would keep rebooting if this was the case I would expect as it would need to shut down for a few mins to let it cool down

I have cleaned it recently and also replaced both fans within the last 12 months as one was making noise. They seem to be working but don't seem to spool up much unless really under load.

Sounds like a GPU fault to me. You might be able to diagnose further using a graphics card status tool (gfxcardstatus)

Have you tried Mac fan control, great app to let you take proper control over any system fans, might indicate one not working internally? It's from crystal ideas if memory serves.

I downloaded gxfcardstatus and have noticed a few interesting things.. Unlike Mac System Preferences gfx will let you select to use either Integrated or discrete (GPU) rather than just using the discrete card.

When using the integrated graphics all crashing issues appear to disappear - but when using Final Cut Pro it will try to switch over to the discrete card or will crash the software, similarly if it's started using the discrete card, gfx will not be able to switch back to the integrated card until Final Cut Pro is closed.. Trying to do anything in Final Cut Pro with the discrete card will crash the system.

Logic Pro appears to open and function fine using the integrated graphics... and doesn't appear to crash when using it.

So this would really point towards the GPU being at fault. This might give me a work around that will at least stop the continuous crashing.

A replacement board looks to be around £200.. I think I might just have to live with it until I get a new machine.

Isn't there a function to turn off the GPU and use the other one?

Isn't the 2010 MBP eligible for a free new GPU. Ends Dec '16 iirc.

ETA: Perhaps not: https://www.apple.com/uk/support/macbookpro-videoi... Looks like it's 2011 machines.
