I'm approaching the end of my current mobile phone contract, which is about £30 per month (give or take depending on how many out of allowance calls I make), it was a 24 month term. For that I got a HTC One M8 and unlimited mins/text and 10Gb data (EE).

I've just had a look around since I fancy upgrading to the HTC 10. The price starts from £50.99, then an additional £29.99 on top (for the exact equivalent above). The price of the top end contract is £74.99 per month!

Doing the calculations, it makes absolutely no odds to be locked into a contract since you can get the HTC 10 brand new for £510 and the price jump from £30 to £50.99 is almost the same over 24 months but you are locked into a contract and also there'll be a price increase in March...

It seems an awful big jump for me and it just got me wondering since I've seen a couple of lease deals for cars that are <£100 (per month).. it seems a bit detached from reality - is anyone really paying that much for just a phone?

£23 on o2 for unlimited calls and texts and 7gb data.

But I bought the iphone outright. In the end the costs are about the same as adding the phone to the contract.

If you split the £500 phone over 24 months it would be £43 I suppose. Sounds a lot putting it that way!

It's a nice try by the phone companies, but if the 24 month contract (and I hate that, who wants to keep the same hardware for 2 years?) price exceeds a SIM-free handset, and a cheap SIM ONly contract, there's something drastically wrong.

Wife's phone out of contract, went with Life mobile, an EE company I think, £6 a month unlimited text, 1000 mins and 2gb data.
It was an offer on money supermarket
Put my Mum on there as well on a £5 a month deal, she had been payg. I think she gets 500 min and 1gb not sure on the texts but it's more than she will ever use.

I went straighto sim only with vodafone when my 24 month contrat ended (xperia Z2). £19 a month for 6GB, unlimited texts and 500 (I think) minutes. That's a 30 day rolling contract. It should be 5GB but they messed it up and gave me a free GB to keep me happy!

£37 which is completely stupid because I got suckered into upgrading my iPhone 5c to a iPhone 6 when I should have just stuck with my 5c. I will be sticking with my 6 in 18 months' time and not upgrading again, thereby reducing my contract to about £20 per month.

I've got the Samsung S6 with unlimited everything (data, calls and texts) on Three for £43 a month - with nothing outright.
I think it's a pretty good deal as I use a lot of data

Why would you want to spend a significant amount on a new phone to have the latest gimmick more frequently?? What a waste!

I was at £29 a month on Virgin with an I phone 5S that I hardly used for 3 months and then sold as I disliked it.
I did a deal and got a Samsung S6 sim free last late summer time.
Ive just kept the number and gone back down to a 30 day virgin sim only deal for a fiver.

500 minutes + 2gb Data unlimited texts
I'll source my own handsets as and when I feel the need to.

+1 I had my iphone 3GS for 5 years. People laughed at me but it worked and I had a SIM only contract for a tenner.
I did upgrade eventually and have had it for nearly 2 years and don't envisage changing it for at least another 2. It does all I need and more that I don't need.

o2, sim only unlimited call and texts, 3gig data . £11.24 a month

All my family are on this, my daughter and I've got old Samsungs from previous contracts so were effectively free, my wife (who is a luddite) has a cheap (cost her about £15) nokia brick, my son has an i-phone 6 which he bought recently. We're all better off than if we were on a sim plus phone contract.

£10 per month with ID
- 500 minutes
- 5000 texts
- 4gb of 4g data

Brought the phone (onePlus2) outright, moved to SIM only about 3-4 years ago after originally buying a Nexus 5 phone.

Last time I brought new phones (all four phones were up at the same time a couple of years ago) we had a Samsung S5, Nexus 6, two Sony Z3s, each worked out at about £35 a month for ~5Gb of data with unlimited calls/texts for a 24 month deal. Had to pay £50 upfront per phone down as well.

This time I couldn't get anywhere near that for a mix of S7s and S7 Edges, all vendors wanting another £15 a month or so. So instead I brought the handsets off ebay (~£450 for the S7s, ~£500 for the S7 Edges) and went with Three's 12 Gb (5Gb has become painful to stick to), 200 minute, unlimited texts SIM plan. That works out as £8.50 a month for the first six months, then £17 a month for the final six months.

Vodafone offered me the S7 Edges at £52 a month with £15 down for 12Gb, or £1263. With Three and ebay I get it for £857. I've saved roughly £1500 across the four phones.

£20 for Unlimited Calls, Texts and Internet on o2.

I took it out 6 or 7 years ago and can't upgrade or I lose it, I have to buy/sell handsets when I want an upgrade.

£16 with BT Mobile (use EE I believe), unlimited calls and texts and 20gb of data on a 12 month contract.
