Watching London's Burning on telly, and "brigade order 373" is mentioned. I go to google it to see if its a real thing, I type "brigade" and it's the first thing that comes up... Tad obscure to be coincidence? If people want to try, I'll happily back down.

Also happened when MrsSE and I were watching Mrs Doubtfire, first thing for "mrs" when everyone else got "mrs browns boys"...
Just tried it and nope, didn't get that pop up. You have been bugged!

Now the question is.. how the hell do we extricate ourselves from all of this?

Google likely seeing other people search the same thing and autosuggesting based on current trends...

This reminds me of a time I was seeing a lass. We were spending more actual time together so stopped emailing each other.

A short time after in her gmail lots of ads started popping up about 'how to win him back'.

How many people would be watching that episode on catch up,from at least a fortnight ago... Then googling it? Not many I'd say!

Ok how about Chrome then?

We are suddenly talking about extension leads at work a lot, and lo and behold I have just seen two ads for them halfway down PH threads, despite not searching for them...

But has anybody else in your office searched for them?

If you have a shared IP address (highly likely) then your search traffic could have been aggregated to that IP.

Could also be Android > Chrome > Google.

When I first saw the thread title I ignored it. We're short of tin foil in our house. However, over recent weeks I've seen a dramatic increase in targeting of adverts. That, of itself, is not a particular problem; an irritation certainly. In some cases though, the source can only have been something which I thought was a private online 'conversation'.

I've got nothing to hide apart from my secrets, personal information and confidences.

Some time ago I 'invented' a new persona with a history and lifestyle different to my own. I went online, onto a specific website that supplies them, so a bit of a non sequitur there. All good fun. 'I've' got, or the invented person has, gmail accounts where I used an email account that was supplied and lasted for an hour I think before self destructing. I use Firefox solely with the different name.

The online difference when browsing with the make-believe name is remarkable. The violation of privacy sort of creeps up on you bit by bit and you don't notice it until you can compare it to a situation where it does not exist. This frog has jumped out of the water.

It's worrying.

having thought a little about it , in my case i think google is the suspect. then selling on the information it farms to facebook , so that facebook can place targeted ads.
having said that , why do the adverts keeping showing things that are similar to what i have just bought ? i just had one delivered , i will not need another for a while .

If its that clever it should be able to screen out single purchase items if you've just bought one.

There are third party aggregators who buy data from various sources and link it all up. There are also web tools to track how mouse cursors move about, how you scroll up and down pages, how quickly you type and so on so 'they' can tell (to an extent) how many different users are on a particular IP address and then who is browsing what.

Ha ha, that is true! Even after you've purchased from somewhere like Amazon, it still keeps flogging the same thing for a while and then it finally gives up. Probably so you'll tell your friends. Then there's when you go to some place, you're there for a while and Google helpfully tells you how good (or bad) the place is. Stoopid computer could have told me that before I got to the joint! Then when you do want it to work - like tell me what the traffic is like to the airport and if my flight is on time it's impossible to find the settings to make all that work!

I really don't like it. Wife asks me the other day while in the car - "would you like an Under Armour t-shirt for your birthday?" "Yes" says I, "a black one".

On the Facebook webpage on the mobile an hour later, with neither of us actually looking up said product in a browser - an Under Armour Sponsored Advert, showing..... a black t-shirt.

No wonder the batteries run down so fast if its listening all the time. I even have microphone access disabled for all apps which is even more concerning.
Slightly O/T but it was reported the other day that the Google mobile phone is always monitoring your location and sending it back to base even if you have location services switched off!

More likely: I sent a gmail to my wife with a link that had been sent to me. My wife opened the email in her gmail account but did not click on the link. Then . . .

We have access routes into email being demanded by the USA. I know Google would not dream of accessing it themselves. Honest, I believe that. They are completely trustworthy and merely being able to sell on information for a profit would not influence their decisions in any way.

Perhaps, just perhaps, I might have been wrong when I said . . .

Google voice search records and keeps conversations people have around their phones – but the files can be deleted

I've just checked mine, its slightly concerning

Checked my google history and it showed a handful of recordings when I was playing with OK Google on my phone, nothing else ( voice activation for calls and texts etc).

I switched it off because it destroyed my phones battery and performance
