Audible books are professionally read aren't they? That's probably why it's £8 a book, 1 a month, pretty much.
Another way to do it is to go on Google Play where there are lots of free and/or cheap ebooks. The Google Play reader (Play Books) can read ebooks to you, although sometimes it isn't perfect. Also, the screen will be on the entire time. I have installed Moon+ Reader and when it reads to you, it turns the screen off.

If you signed up for the trial, you can also sign up for one on Audible.com and get more free books. You can swap between .co.uk and .com on the Audible app, and both downloads appear in the On Device list.
I thought they were expensive at first, but they're really not for what you're getting. It's true some books can be not so great value for 1 credit if they're a bit short. I get D&D novels which are usually trilogies or pentalogies even (is that the right word? ), so whole series get expensive, but I'm happy with 7 quid for 10-11 hours. I use Moonreader for reading too and the robot voice is just usable, I couldn't stick that over proper naration.
I probably get through 2-2.5 per month so 1 credit isn't enough, but I stay on that membership. Take advantage of the 3 credits for £18 when you need them, and add any books you want to your wishlist in case they come on sale priced less than 1 credit. They do special offer memberships occasionally too; after Black friday last year Audible.com did 3 months for 99c each.
Make sure you listen to the samples too! I've heard some that I had to get past, things like names I know from other books being pronounced wrong and speeding up at the end of the sentence andstickingallthewordstogether, but some were un-listenable.

I'm a recent Audible convert and I'm loving it, my commute is 35-40mins each way of pure tedium so an audiobook is just the ticket.
Regarding the prices yes they are expensive but it's often worth having a look at the book you want on Amazon first as sometimes you can buy the Kindle book and add the Audible narration on for a few quid extra and this works out cheaper than buying it on Audible.
Also Whispersync means that you can swap between reading and listening relatively seamlessly.

Bit more expensive but allows unlimited audio and e books is Allyoucanbooks
