Do not waste your money on a Macbook or cheapo Laptop!

I bought the OH a £50 Chromebook off Gumtree today and she loves it!

It's not like she's only used crap machines in the past. She is used to a Macbook Air but having broken the screen on the last one, I got her this to tide her over until I found a suitable replacement.

No need.....it has everything she wants. Speed of boot up (under 10 seconds from closed lid), Chrome Browser (obviously) and all the gestures her Macbook Air had (2 fingers back/forward/up/down), battery life 10 hours, lightweight, etc etc.

Having never used one myself, even I was impressed! It's not like I got a bargain, this is what these things go for........£50!!

I agree. A Chromebook is an excellent bit of kit for browsing the net.

I have 2 ChromeOS devices in my house now.

Previous to this I had a Linux machine that I used for everything, then I bought a Acer C710 as a toy and quickly found myself using it more and more.

I now run a LG Chromebase (all in one desktop) as my daily machine, I can everything I need to do on it (surfing, image editing, wordpress, forums, facebook etc). I have slightly modified it from standard by removing the OEM 2gb ram and fitting an 8gb card.

The only thing I boot my Linux machine for now is when I need to do stuff at the car (VCDS running in a virtual windows environment) and ripping CD's etc to upload to my Google Play Music.

ChromeOS will get better as well now as Android App support is coming slowly.

I have a MacBook Pro on the coffee table and an iPad, but bought an HP Chromebook on a £100 off offer at Argos in January.

It's an excellent bit of kit which now travels everywhere with me. It's small enough that you don't feel too much of an idiot when using it in hotel bars, whilst still being powerful enough to fiddle with the odd spreadsheet, Word document, photos etc.

Huge fan of Chromebooks and highly recommend the Toshiba Chromebook 2.

Also the Acer C720 despite being an older model is an absolute bargain for around £60-£70

If getting a new one though make sure it has atleast 4gb ram.

ChromeOS uses 2.5gb on moderate use my LG Chromebase was running like pants earlier in the year, 8gb in it now and it flys.

I purchased a TC2 but he to return it due to a fault with the trackpad (was broken). In the time I had it, it was wonderful to use and the battery life was pretty good.

As my requirements have changed, I went for a desktop PC but may wait till the end of the year before I consider another to see if the specs change. 2Gb of RAM isn't really enough and the 4Gb my one had was enough to browse without having too many tabs open and hammering it (about 10-15 tabs) whilst connected to my TV with YouTube open as well.

Completely agree. We went travelling for a few months and didn't want to take my macbook so bought a £100 Acer chromebook from Argos. Was mostly drawn to it as it has a sd card slot so perfect for backing up camera photos.

Since getting back, the wife has adopted it as her go to computer for browsing the net and watching stuff online. She loves it and wants for nothing else.

Solid state, so nothing to wear out, instant boot up and a delight to use. For £100 it's amazing value and has stood up to being thrown around quite well.

Was this the same as a usual memory swap or was it a bit of a unapproved upgrade?

I made the mistake of buying my father (who is as computer illiterate as they get) a Toshiba Chromebook 2. I went for it because it has the best screen (FHD IPS) of the chromebooks available.
The mistake was that I now had to scale everything up as the FHD made everything too small for his eyes hehe

But, other than that, amazing bit of kit despite it being one of the more expensive ones. Easily feels like it should be 2 to 3 times the money.

Wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments here, if you need Windows we bought an Asus XT205A

Great battery, runs Office well

The economics/life are interesting as well you could buy 8 of these or a Macbook

I bought my kids a Chromebase and they do everything on it. Surfing the internet, doing school projects, video calls, games etc etc

The only thing they can't do is play Minecraft.

Meanwhile in 12 months the only problems I've had with it has been solved by turning it on and off again.

Compared to hours and hours of trying to sort problems on the two Windows laptops in the house it's a total no brainer for me.

And it was cheap as chips.

If it wan't for work there would never be any Windows in my house ever again.

What are these things like for watching multiple video feeds? For example could I browse the net while also having something on iplayer running as well as having a football or tennis match streaming?

I'm guessing that the basic £100-£150 ones won't allow me to do the above however what about the ones which are a bit more expensive?

Why not? My MacBook Air is great.

It's not Apple's fault that you want to hit each other in the face with its product.

The Chromebook 2 I have has no problem with youtube and Netflix simultaneous.

Was a right pain on the Chromebase as LG made the ram hard to access, some of the newer Chromebooks also have soldered ram.
