I get the odd reminder that "this application is not designed for 64 bit operation" etc, which I have not seen before and the odd application crash, but on the whole, yes.

I've been talking about this at work recently.

In theory, as someone approaches one of our outlets, we could send an offer to their phone to encourage them to stop there. Don't think anyone has had the bottle to implement it yet, though.

I'd find that a huge turn off.

People have been caught out by this, you can go into the history and see all your location data.

Personally I love it, tells me when I need to leave to get my flight on time which has saved my bacon a few times. It did think the coffee shop was my home for a while which sort of gave me a clue I might need to spend less time there. I think it's great when I'm lost and I can just talk to it and ask it to point me in the right direction, although if I put the meeting in my calendar it does it automatically. Who needs a secretary, well not for work at least

Interesting thread, I think it highlights the lack of informed consent for the data collection about you.

The statements of 'it suddenly started doing this' highlight that people haven't understood the effect of accepting software/application updates and what is being agreed to.

I'm not arguing for or against the technology as some people find it useful and others do not. Personally I don't like it but accept mobile devices need a certain amount of location info to route calls, etc but don't need a gps fix to achieve this.

If people understand what is happening and give informed consent that is fine but when it happens without consent or do not understand they have given consent that isn't fine.

I suspect most people don't understand and are being turned into a product and monetised for someone else's profit.

I agree totally mate. I've got no problems with what is going on this far, but that's because I dont understand the scope of the data being recorded, as it's not disclosed. I'm certainly so far not afraid of it, but these things seem to sneak up on you don't they?

My phone started doing this last week. I've no idea what I did to suddenly enable this feature which others have said has been around for some time.

I've only got experience of Google but you certainly don't need GPS for it. It can happily use phone signal triangulation (obv not as accurate). My GPS is off permanently as it's a battery drainer.
