I really hope this is not the final effect of those two cameras.
The edges of that bottle are quite blurred, looks like a kid has been playing on photoshop
That's the final effect of a mode that is still in beta (even though it's offered on a full iOS release). As far as I know it's using the wide camera purely to create a depth map, then the actual shot is taken on the telex camera, the depth map then applies stages of Gaussian blur, masking out the in focus object. The edges of that bottle are quite blurred, looks like a kid has been playing on photoshop
It's great to give a nice little kick to your social media stuff, it's not something that should be scrutinised, printed etc, or meaning you can leave a DSLR at home if that's the effect you want.

well hopefully the end versio is a little more polished than that. It's great to give a nice little kick to your social media stuff, it's not something that should be scrutinised, printed etc, or meaning you can leave a DSLR at home if that's the effect you want.
There are apps out there now that can do better than this with one camera

Any examples? I'm not sure how any app could depth map without two cameras, which is what really gives the depth of field a nice touch. The photo about doesn't really show it off. There are apps out there now that can do better than this with one camera

Hopefully this will show what you can do with one camera.https://goo.gl/photos/fvWmLKts6kNVqMq89

fksocks! Apple's Airpods have been delayed. They were due to be released "at the end of October" (which we are at now), but Apple have said they "need more time" to get them right. And I was so looking forward to getting a set as well.
Oh, well. Better late than releasing buggy tech I suppose.

If that's a selfie, and I assume you're holding the camera with your back paws, then it just reinforces my assumption that our pets are conspiring to use our own technology against us.Edited by eharding on Wednesday 26th October 23:56

Had my first real opportunity to use the 7 Plus' portrait mode in anger during a trip to London with the wife and friends.
I'm largely very impressed for what is still classed as a beta software feature. Having previously shot extensively with a DSLR and some nice big aperture lenses, I found the relative simplicity incredibly refreshing, especially where trying to obtain sharp faces/eyes and a blurred background/foreground were often hit and miss in the past.
Outdoors and good lighting. I was expecting my wife's hair to pose a problem for portrait mode, but it nailed it. If I'm being fussy, it did overly soften her scarf.
Indoors, reasonable lighting. I did think the light levels would be too low to trigger portrait mode, but it didn't complain at all apart from my friend being too close to the lens. Only nitpick would be that my friend's left t-shirt sleeve confused portrait mode to produce the strange artefact above.
Same lighting as shot above. I was fully expecting the patterned glass background behind my friend's face to pose a problem, and indeed it did. Immediately around his nose, portrait mode has missed out a small section of the patterned glass, whilst blurring out the rest. A further nitpick would be the overly aggressive blurring of his arm, despite it being largely in the same plane as his face to suggest the mode prioritises faces above everything else.
